I am not religious but this feels like miraculous divine intervention! I have been battling the 35 vs 24 argument for a while without finding a good solution. Then, out of the blue, Sigma offer this up. Praise be!

Please let it be two things, optically good, quick and above all consistent to focus, specifically while tracking.

Looks like my next lens!

Yes please. This on one D750 with a 58mm 1.4 on another. Would never need anything else for the way I shoot.

Super interested in this. Makes me wonder if we will see a 35-70 f/2 instead of a 24-70??

The wide sigma art primes are basically reversed short tele designs. If this zoom has the same basic design .... I'm in.

This is true. If weight (and size) is important, you certainly have better options. My 35/1.4 is only 200 grams. And the RX1 is only around 600 with accessories. I value a compact and lightweight setup for things such as day-to-day images, projects and travel.

But compact/lightweight isn't everything to everyone all the time. Would I use this lens? I'm happy with what I use so it's not for me, but I'm sure many will be willing to at least try it and see if they can live with the compromises if the payoff is big enough for them on a personal level.

I personally doubt the size/weight will be the only compromise compared to primes (I wouldn't expect rendering or character to be too great), but again it depends on what does it for you personally, and I do admire Sigma for upping their game over recent years, both in terms of quality and innovation.

An F2 zoom is impressive no matter what the FL is.

Lets wait for reviews and see how it performs.

Bingo. That's what I was thinkin'! get rid of my 20mm and 35mm, I should be set... But what's holding me is the 82mm thread

Any word on pricing yet?

Interesting they would potentially hit their 24mm and 35mm sales rather than release a 135mm (or even 85mm) but perhaps the knowledge was already there from their 18-35mm f/1.8

I own both the sigma 24 and 35. I am excited about this lens, but I can't say I would give up my two primes for it. The 24 at 1.4 is pretty awesome and I'd also rather shoot my 35 at 1.4 then f/2 half the time. 24-35 f/2 during the ceremony however, now that would be neat. If a 35-85 f/2 is released that WILL go in the bag though. Too useful not to.

If this one is great in focus then it is definitely a lens for wedding photographers. I like 35 for portraits of 1~2, but there always exists demand of shooting formals/group portraits at any time...I will appreciate even if it only works at 35 and 24, like some leica lenses.

Very good reviews on lenstip: http://www.lenstip.com/index.php?test=obiektywu&test_ob=447

MTF curves do show it lesser than primes in the corners though:

The 24-70mm f2.8 is all I need. Wider I go with the 14-24mm f2.8. Why add a third lens that contributes nothing additional?

The only primes I use are a 16mm fisheye and a 105mm f2 DC lens. Otherwise the image quality and autofocus performance from my zoom lenses is more than good enough. Changing lenses means missed shots and more opportunities for dirt to get inside the camera.

When I shot with Leica cameras and lenses I had no choice but to use primes but with Nikon that restriction does not exist. I would no more go back to shooting with primes than I would go back to shooting with film.

I would be replacing my 24-70 with the 23-35 not adding it.

Then why use a 24-70 when nikon has a 24-120?

The idea is getting closer to prime aperture and image quality (the idea behind art series) in a zoom lens at the expense of size and a restricted zoom range.

with the 24 - 35 here, maybe a 35 - 70 will be next. At f2, that would be really interesting.
