p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · First Instar Cinnabars

I recently posted images of the adult moths mating:

https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1369027

This morning I spotted that the first of the eggs have hatched. I had good support for myself and the camera but irregular breezes limited the number of good frames.

These larvae lack the strong colours and banded pigment that they will have in later instars:

EM-1, extension, Kiron x 1.5 TC, reversed Schneider HM 40mm at f16, twin TTL RC diffused flash, hand-held. The FOV was about 6mm wide and these larvae about 5mm long.

The images are uncropped.

Thanks, Brian.

I could Photoshop some in.

Probably best to wait for the second instar, where the deficit should have been removed.

So very nicely done Harold. I do love the composition of the last.

Thanks, Birdie.

I was rather at the mercy of the whims of the larvae, as they don't move much at that stage. The last one was not originally uploaded with the first two. I was sure there were more. Some distraction had caused me to leave half of the images on the camera card.

I learned something from this batch. Previously, I had always found first instars on the flower buds and was convinced that the eggs were always laid on the buds. This time, the larvae were all on leaves lower down on the plant, only moving up to the top, near the flower buds, on the second day.
