It was very windy the other day at Fern Ridge. The black terns were fishing in a small, wind-protected corner of a large body of water. They would come in against the wind, make one or two dives in the fifteen foot long calm stretch, then peel around downwind and set up for another pass. I shot them for over an hour before they flew off. The only clear vantage point was head on, with only about 20-30 feet of working distance between me and the fishing zone. It's the first time I've wanted a shorter lens for birds.
