Hello. I am new to Fred Miranda, actually this is my first post. I have a question about the D3s... I have 5 DX bodies and want to go FX. I have been doing quite a bit of bird photography, pirched birds and BIF... Would the D3s be a good (older) body to use for this? I also shoot storm scapes and land scapes. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to FM! The D3s is an awesome camera, and right now is a lot of value for the money. Excellent AF - close to Nikon's current best (hard to tell the difference in the real world), wonderful image quality, pro body ruggedness, fast frame rate, great low light ability / low noise, the list goes on and on.

You really can't go wrong with a D3S as long as you have the glass to go with it. If you've only been shooting DX bodies, you will need to consider if your current lens line-up will support full-frame.

The only possible down-side could be the fact that it is "only" 12 mb. Unless you plan on printing billboards, I don't see a problem with that. Wait - they did print billboards with this camera before, so no down-side.

A 12MP FX body will not provide much reach for birds, so make sure you have close subjects, long glass, or both. Keep at least one of the DX bodies.

Thanks for the quick reply and the welcome. I have invested in some FX glass for birding, the Extra reach I get on the DX bodies comes in handy. My 2 birding lens are the Nikkor 300mm f/2.8 and I have been shooting the Tamron 150-600 quite a bit latly. I only have one DX lens and it's a 17-55mm f/2.8... I mostly use it for Stormscapes / Landscapes.

I'd look at a D800 for what you'll pay for a D3s...
100% crops with that sensor are insane!

I agree with trenchmonkey. A D800 or D800e is a much better value and will give much better image details, 36MP vs. 12MP. No contest for cropping the images.

Unless you have to have the professional build quality *I* find little to justify the price of the D3s over a D750 or D800.

+1 to a D800(e), you can also find it much cheaper.

If you were doing weddings or photojournalism then the D3s would make a lot of sense. Cropping comes in very handy with birding and the D800 offers tons of that.

Depends on the deal you are getting on that D3s and the lenses you have.
If you have a 500/600mm lens, then a D3s will be great. But if you only have a 300/400, then the added mp's of a second hand D800 will be well needed.

What's your typical subject distance? With a D800 & 500 mm I can shoot most songbirds from as far out as 10 yards because the files degrade very little when upsampled in ACR. With a D3s I'd want to be 2 or 3 m closer. 600 mm poses less of a problem, of course.

Yes the D3s is a great first step into FX, and they are really a great bargain these days. (I have both the D3s and a D800.) I prefer to use the D800 more for landscapes and static subjects, and the D3s for wildlife. I shoot the D3s in 1.2 crop mode.

The D3s is a FPS monster ! Can't believe how many shots you can squeeze off, which is a great advantage for BIF. I use mine with a 600mm, 500mm and a 200-400 mm, and don't really find the need to do that much cropping. Additionally, the low light shooting capability is superb.

You can't go wrong with either a D800/D800e/D810, but for "my" style of shooting, I prefer the D3s. (In fact, if I would have purchased the D3s first, I may not have even bought the D800.)

Oh yeah,.......... B o o m e r __ S o o n e r !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks again for the replies... Most of the time I am shooting the Tamron 150-600mm... 225-900mm DX (sort of). I still try to get as close to my subject as possible. I like to shoot my D2x @ 8FPS (Crop Mode) for BIF and D7000 for more static wild life.

My thoughts of why I'm thinking D3s.... 1.2 Crop. More FPS. More Accuracy. High ISO=Faster Shutter Speeds. I shoot mostly around Swamps/Slough type areas and really need a body that has better than average High ISO performance.

Thanks! Boomer.... Sooner....!

Just a couple of examples of what I do and the environment I do it in. I believe the 1st photo was shot with the D7000 and the 2nd was shot with the D7100.

For your needs best choice could be D7100. It's the best choice for BIF and plenty great for landscapes.
D3s is bit what you need for identified needs.

The D3S has a 1.2 crop mode (8.4 MP). Gives even smaller file sizes and saves you the trouble of cropping in post if you want 20% more "reach", provided you can still frame your subject the way you want within the 1.2 boundaries.
