p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Something Different...my sister's wedding w/ images

My sister got married 11 days ago in NYC, and we were there for it. While I did not want to be the primary photographer, I did know I would want to shoot some. Plus, she asked me to shoot some Polaroid/pack film for her...which is something I rarely get to do anymore. My main pack film camera (Polaroid 250) developed a wicked leak, so I have not been using it. So, I had to use a cheapo Polaroid 100 for the color shooting. I spent a while talking with the girl she hired to shoot, and she was fine with me being along. I planned to shoot a lot of film too, but I just ran out of space to carry things with me on the day. Anything without any kind of a border is a standard d750 digital file.

So, here is some mostly very different stuff from what I normally post...and very different from anything that I generally see on her. Maybe some will like it, but it is not likely most's taste. No worries. She loves it, and that's all that matters to me.

No CC, please...just a share.

the polaroid stuff is WAY WAY better than any of the digital stuff.
You did something different and it is, IMO, 100x better than anything you would normally do. Shows a different side of you. More artistic, less controlled, more emotional.
I think everything about photography these days is way to controlled and predictable. These take a step away from that and proves to be your best work yet.
Congrats.

also great meeting you guys in NYC!

I'm amazed at how vintage the film shots look. Of course it is influenced by their awesome style and that everyone is not trying to date the photos by shooting video with their ipads.

software for digital files can do a fairly good job with color emulation. for regular film that is 400h, portra, etc.
The polaroid stuff is REALLY hard to pull off with any preset.

BW is almost impossible. I have tried a number of presets and programs and the closest I can get is with my Leica MM and Silver Efex in LR. The problem is grain and shadow highlight transition. Film is just different. Chuck Anerino helped me with some Silver Efex presets a while back and then I modified them further based on scans I have of various films. I can get 95% there. VSCO, Mastin etc. for BW doesn't even come close IMO.

After looking at the polaroids I´m so glad for digital. Astonishing that people said that the quality level and expectations dropped with the introduction of digital cameras. In fact, the quality was never really there...

Thanks to Kodak or whoever invented digital cameras!

That's not really a fair assessment at all. The color images are intentionally "low-fi" by using the cheapest quality land camera available, which is what my sister wanted. The B&W's are actually incredibly clear and crisp because I used a professional camera for those ones. If you think that most photos from the 50's, 60's looked terrible, then you have not had much experience with them.

Agree with Doug--stepping way outside what you normally do produced great results. The point was obviously not technical excellence but rather capturing a unique feel, which you did in spades. Well done! Have you thought about how your experimentation here might affect your regular work?

Maybe it could affect my work a little. Honestly, this was not really "new" experimenting for me...more like going back in time to before I shot weddings so much and did more artistic shooting for just myself. But, there was definitely a higher level of intent and making definitive and different choices than I would have in the past.

Ultimately, what I shoot is a blending of what I like and what I think I can use to make money...our final product meets somewhere in the middle.

Interesting to see the differences with the two cameras. Some lovely stuff there and some interesting other stuff. You really got around some great locations there too. Was there a primary shooter there too? Would be interesting to see how they worked with the setting too.

On a totally different note... I love her dress. She looked great.

Nice job.

Graham.

45 is my favorite of the Polaroids. Just seems like it "gets" the atmosphere of the wedding better than any of the other shots (no offense intended towards the digital shots, of course).

Really really like 34 as well. Love the tones. Wondering what it looked like SOOC. Did you push the shadows a lot to get the detail and color out in the groom's suit?
