How does is compare to your 85 1.8G, 85 1.4G?

How about the 70-200? I realize a zoom is a different beast.

I'm looking for a portrait lens with character.

But I have the 85's and likely will soon have the 70-200. I doubt I'll notice much benefit with the 105DC.

You already have the 58G? That has character. The 85 is pretty close to the 58 though, so the 105DC is a nice length. I haven't tried the 851.4, but I feel like the DC has more character than the 851.8G, thats a nice lens, but I haven't really fallen in love with it.

Also I am not much into zooms except on the ultrawide lengths so can't say I'm a huge fan of the 70-200. I have the 180 2.8 that gives me length if I need it.

I use the 105mm f2 DC lens on engagement shoots and during the bride prep segment. I never liked the 85mm focal length as it was too short on a 35mm film body and too long on a crop camera where it became a 135mm lens. When I got my first full frame camera in 2008 I quickly sold my 85mm lens and bought the 105mm f2 DC lens.

I find 105mm to be the perfect focal length for portraiture and it can be used with a full frame camera indoors and even where space is tight as it usually is in the areas where the bride does her preparation. This is also sharper than any of the Nikon 85mm lenses.

For engagement shooting it is great to be able to have either the foreground or the background adjustable for blurring. I can get effects with this lens that would not otherwise be possible with any digital post processing. It is also fantastic as I can get the effect while still having the subjects in sharp focus using a smaller aperture.

The 105 f2 DC is my favorite Nikon portrait lens since switching over from Canon.

It's perfect for shooting candids in low light and I find it's a much more usable focal length than 135.....which used to be my fav. Canon lens.

I don't have these on my blog yet, but these were Engagement Images shot with the 105 f2 DC....

Not sure if the above link will work.

Has anyone here used this lens with studio lighting? If so, your thoughts.

Thanks,
