Along with looking for a new MF 50mm, I'm considering selling my older 300/4L non-IS.

After reading reviews, and looking at samples/charts, this lens looks like a winner. It received a very favorable review from Lenstip, but they did have a 1 gripe....the AF accuracy. They claimed the lens missed about 11% of shots, and 15% with a TC attached.

Any users here that can either confirm or refute this claim?

Thanks
Aaron

Never used either, but from what I've read, the 300 looks really good. Curious why you're selling? It wouldn't be as useful for people, though. If my AF only missed 15% of the time, I think I'd be happier.

Here's the photozone review:

Thanks Mike. Well, I love the 300L. Dont get me wrong. I just don't have that much use for it. The price and condition were perfect, it was sitting on the shelf and I held it. Bad idea since I had no L glass at the time.

I just dont have much use for it and investing in a replacement with better IQ than my 55-250IS would have been more appropriate. Especially since I had just bought a 60D (up from an XS) and a 17-85IS to replace my 18-55IS.

And since I do use my 55-250 indoors (from about 70-150) under poor lighting, a 70-200/2.8 would be ideal. Yes IS helps a lot on the 55-250. But then theres the issue of IQ and that whole "feels like a toy" issue. So either this Tamron 70-200/2.8, or it's little brother 70-300VC, would be great replacements for my 55-250.

And I agree, 10% miss rate doesnt sound all that bad. I'd just like to hear from people who have used it to see if it's better or worse.

I just got mine and at first I was really missing focus but not all the time. Once you get used to it, then most of the time you'll get the shot. I'm using it handheld too despite its weight. The first time I used it was for a soccer game. AF was not bad but I had lots of out of focus but maybe it was me. Let's see if I can attach some sample shots here.

Is this the newer or older Tamron 70-200?? I bought the new one Tamron SP 70-200mm f/2.8 Di VC to use on my 6D after selling my Canon 70-200mm II. But focus was very inconsistent. I would say 3 or 4 out of 10 were out of focus. Either front focus or back focus. So I ended up returning it and bought another Canon. It's a beautiful lens in black and when it locks focus it's tack sharp, but the focus killed it for me. If Tamron could come out with a 70-200mm that would be spot on I would buy one. Another thing to consider is focus breathing. The Canon seems it has more reach at 200mm than the Tamron.

Those shots look good. Keep in mind, a faster shutter is needed with no IS or VC. Shooting wide open allows slower shutter speeds, but possibly at the cost of AF accuracy due to thinner DOF. I've experienced similar situations, once or twice, with my 300/4L non-IS. Often I find myself using a shutter of 1/1200 or faster with that lens. A shutter speed 3-4x the focal length should work great for you when handholding. In good light, try stopping down to f4, or even 5.6/6.3. Hopefully AF accuracy will be better. Don't be afraid to turn up ISO to compensate. I'd rather have a slightly grainy shot, than a blurry OOF shot.

Nope. This is about the older, non-VC version, the exact model name in the thread title. One review stated that it missed focus 10-15% of the time. Which really isnt that bad. This would mean 1-2 missed shots out of 10, or 10-15 out of 100. I dont consider this horrible.

Strangely, I hear more complaints about front/ back focus issues with Sigma lenses than Tamron.
