p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Masks at midnight

Kat and Olga wanted to do an "urban mask shoot" around midnight last Saturday. The idea was to shoot in an urban setting with the city lights in the background. Since the masks and wardrobe use LED lights, we had to find a location at night where the ambient light and the LED lights were in good balance. We tried a few locations but could not get anything to work. However, we did finally find one of the bridges over the river which had bright lighting pedestrian lighting and this turned out reasonably well ...about 1 AM.... not an hour that I normally think of shooting ... but it was fun with the quasi-steampunk theme.

The LED lighting plus ambient was pretty good with close-up shots ... however, the strength of the LED's sort of overpowered the ambient for full length. Unfortunately, we had to shoot high ISO and wide aperture ... causing some DOF problems when I did not nail the appropriate point of focus (as in the first shot)

An interesting shoot and I like the results. It may be my eyes, but the image seem a little soft. Kat must be a very interesting person with all her ideas.

Something you don't see very often. Nice idea!

Great idea, and you found a good balance of ambient and mask-light in the shots. Well done!

Indeed there is some softness in the images ... Shooting at wide apertures with the Canon 50mm 1.4 is a problem ...I do make mistakes when trying to choose the appropriate focus point for best image overall focus ... and the lens is pretty soft as well. I should have used the 85mm 1.2 which is a bit better for overall lens crispness than the 50.
