p.3 #1 · p.3 #1 · Sony Announces New a7r II, 42mp Camera

I added a Sony A7 to my Canon toolkit awhile back. It's really not that bad.... apart from less than optimal ergonomics and AF performance. What I lost is the weight. Boy it is so free shooting with the A7 (either MF or adapted EF lenses).

Having said that, some areas like incredibly short battery life prevents me from using it fully on pro-gigs.

Do the Sony cameras have worse battery life than the Fuji X-T1? The Fuji is reported to have very short AF, but at least using it with manual focus and EVF only, I found that I only a little over 1 full battery over the course of about 8hrs of shooting an event with LOTS of dancing photos.

I predict they sell it for a year and then add a "reportage" version with max. 24 mp - double sell.

Surely this is the A7II?

No,

think the A7rII ist superior.
I only shortly looked into it as 42 mp is a NO GO for me, but I think:

It has a new sensor technology and no "shutter", means you have none of these endless VF blackouts witch drive me crazy.

I don't think I'd use it for weddings, but if the focus is indeed better with Canon glass, I might add one to the kit for portraits, landscapes, and commercial work (non-event) and get an adapter

OT - anyone who can't stomach a single card slot should never shoot film

Really OT - I'm more worried about getting into a car accident on the way to the venue than I am about card failure

I've had both those things happen. Fortunately neither ruined the day.

Did they both happen on the same day?

Nope. fortunately. I've had two card failures. Both were failures to format so no images were taken.

The "back in my day when we shot film" excuse doesn't play well in a modern setting where all professional gear has dual slots. Standards change. Back in the day we didn't have seat belts in cars either, doesn't make it a good idea to drive without one.

All things equal I would prefer someone shooting my important event with a camera with dual slots. It is a legitimate concern in today's litigious environment.

Shot film (color slide film) for 4 years and single card slot digital for 3.

It's not a matter of not being able to 'stomach' it, it's a matter of taking unnecessary risks when there's no rational reason to.
Shooting with a single slot cam for professional work (in a world where 5DIII, D750 & D810's exist) is akin to not wearing your seat belt en-route to said gigs because you don't like how it feels or feel it inhibits you.

And
Designing a 3K body (the A7RII) with single card slot in this day and age is short sided IMHO

If this new camera is anything like the a7s but with better AF and battery life, this should be a great camera. But I don't know about the 42 megapixel. That's way overkill imo.

Before they put a 2nd card slot in an A7, I vote for a bigger battery that can go the distance

But now we've just made a bigger camera — which brings us back to a dSLR

Bah, with a normal lens attached I doubt many would even notice a 2x sized battery and a second card slot.

It would just mean a slightly better grip/ergonomics.

I don't understand why these cameras don't have larger grips... We're going to put a lens on it anyways, just give us a comfortable grip to hold onto. It's wasting potential space they could use making these rectangular bodies - if the grip sticks out as far as one of the smaller lenses for the body, that's probably perfect for a camera this size.

Maybe if you shoot 24 or 36 frames per memory card.
