And with the older Canon glass, especially zooms, you have to be careful with your filters. My 70-300 non-L was downright useless with just half-decent filters, crazy haze and reflections.

I realize that that's not the best example, but the point is that Canon's coatings have improved significantly, and this makes a big difference in filter usability, or not, depending on the age of the lens.

Yup. My 55-250 is useless with filters. Even a Canon brand UV effects focusing. :/

I found my 100-400 v. I images shot with a Heliopan SH-PMC CPL focused ok, but had a light "dirty" look.

Now we have two pieces of factual feedback which agree. I still have a question on my mind about the MRC vs. non-MRC CP effect on 100-400 MkI. However, I had hopes for control of feather iridescence in sunlight by the use of a CP, yet, my recent tests with 100-400 MkII showed that benefit was minute considering the penalty of CP caused loss of light.
Therefore, in the future I see myself not needing any CPs on telephoto lenses.

I generally use CP filters on telephotos to control reflections from water and window surfaces. I use the B+W MRC KSM maybe a dozen times a year on the 100-400L and 70-200L lenses (combined), and I use the Canon drop-in CP filter on my 300/2.8L IS and 500/4L IS about two or three times a year. That's not often, but when it's needed, it's very useful.

No harm done, Jim, we all get our kicks from something or the other.....as long as it's legal.
