This amazing piece of engineering arrived this afternoon. I've never held and I can't recall ever seeing a Zeiss lens before in person. Sounds crazy... but it's true. It's almost a piece of art. I'm so impressed with the build... the focusing ring is buttery smooth.

The sad part... I'm without a camera... waiting on the 5Dsr to be released/delivered. (1st world problems..I know) lol

I'm not sad.. just excited to give this chunk of glass a try.

HURRY UP CANON>>>>RELEASE THE 5Ds/r !!!!

Well, there's nothing better for getting over this kind of thing than a good shopping spree!!

Let's see... Otus 55 & 85, 21/2.8, 15/2.8 and maybe one of the 35s?

Should only be around $15K, give or take.

Edit: you'll also need some longer glass. I'd suggest the Leica 180/3.4 APO and 280/4 APO.

^^^ nice!

Well... next in the buy bin... the Zeiss 50mm MP.... would love to hear some feedback from the owners of this lens. I've gone through a number of Canon and Sigma 50mm's ... I'm ready to give Zeiss a shot for sure.

Hatch, a quick question, please. I am on the fence regarding the 135 APO because I need to be sure of my ability to focus it properly. For that, I need a long enough focus throw, like on the Otus 55 and 85. Can you tell me how many turns on the focus ring? Thanks!
And have fun with your fist Zeiss, but, beware, it is addictive. You have been warned!

Many thanks.

Well... not sure if this will make sense? It was about 2 full rotations... each about 130 degrees? Maybe less...

How this helps.

The Zeiss 135 is one of the easiest to focus lenses I've used (its got about 265 degrees of focus throw). Focus confirmation dot/beep is incredibly accurate at shorter distances (less than 20'). At longer distances live view and 10x magnification is needed to get critical focus.

One of the better 50mm lenses out there. If you don't mind manual focus.

Philippe, total 270 degrees, but as you know former 2/100 owner that this matter nothing if it's skrew-up "360 degrees from 0.5-1m and 2 degrees from 1 meter to infinity"... Don't worry, 2/135 is done better, it's about 90 degrees from 1.9m to infinity, of which about 45 degrees from 3.5 meters to infinity.

From 0.8m to 1.9m it's 180 degrees - that is a lot (at least for me) and I would not mind having shorter turn on those distances. This one will do, but it's quite slow.

In practice I can focus subjects at 25 meter distance very easily unlike 2/100 where it always takes 3-5 tries to get there due to superfast focus on large distances. Also in practice biggest issue from focusing perspective is that when I shoot without tripod it's really hard to hold the magnified part of image in subject, maybe A7mkII with it's IBIS would help to that.

Just a quick note: the IBIS makes a big difference in focusing. Shooting with my Fd 50-300 the other day, even on a monopod, is usually quite hard when magnified. On the A7 II, just rock solid for magnified focusing. It's nice that it kicks in as soon as you magnify.

congratulation!
50MP at F2 is hard to lock using focus confirmation, 100MP and 135 Apo are easier.
I have got many missfocussed full body portrait with 50MP, and now replaced with 50 Art.

Many thanks. And thanks for the info. I'm sure it's going to take some practice to shoot wide open even on the 135mm. Should be fun

My ZF 50/2, depending on the shot, shows various chromatic and coma aberrations wide open, all pretty much gone by f/4. The out of focus rendering is outstanding. I have no problem eye focusing it on the D800. The I expect that the Sigma 50 Art is technically more highly corrected at f/2. The ZF 50/2 also holds up very well into the smaller stops. Even f/16 is useable, depending on your taste in diffraction.

I was expecting to see the UPC code cut out of the box for a rebate...

Carry on.
