Hi Guys,

I just noticed these bubbles in the clear plastic element of my SB-900. Does anybody have any idea what might have caused these (forgive the poor quality of the photo please)?

Hmmmmm. They won't hurt. Is it new? They could be thought of as extra diffusion. If those appeared after using the flash several times then I would definitely take it back

The flash is not new. I was just looking at the flash today and I noticed them.

Heat. If you use them often for multiple shots, especially in an enclosure and/or machine gun them they will do that.

Looks like heat damage to me, especially if something was touching the plastic when it was hot and was pulled away. At least that's my speculation. The SB900 was known for over-heating and the issue was fixed with the SB910.

Heat,

SB-900 : Overheat - 50 continuous shots
SB-910 : Overheat - No overheating at 200 Shots. The unit reduces power of the flash to prevent overheating.

yo can also try the SB900 with thermal protection.

The downside is that the unit reduces power and if you are counting on that power... If it starts to bother you, its replaceable for $25.

This is one of biggest issue with Sb-900 thats why they have made new version Sb-910.

Anyway to prevent this issue:

SB-900 Firmware Update 5.02
Enable thermal protection
use envelop battery AA 2,000mAh or 1,900 mAh
use Nikon SD-9 external battery pack

Try not to flash too quickly but give a couple sec between on 1/1 (power)

I hate to disagree, but any battery will allow this "problem" and the SD-9 makes it far worse (Yes, I have several SD-8's, SD-8A's and SD-9's).

Its simply from shooting too quickly on high power settings. The thermal protection won't stop it either - by the time that shuts the flash down you can shoot many rapid fire full power shots.

I have seen the same thing in my SB-26's, SB-24's and SB-800's BTW. Its nothing new and certainly not limited to the SB-900. I also seriously doubt that it was "cured" with the Sb-910.

If you want them to stay pristine, keep them in a box on the shelf.
