p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · New Editorial Portfolio

Hey folks! I'm putting together a portfolio to give to a few magazines and papers. It includes a bit of everything, but mostly people, so I thought I'd give you guys a look. Feel free to critique - both layout and images. I don't mind cutting weaker photos (still a bit heavy for me), but I need it to flow.

Let me know what you think!

My face looked like #1 after going through these. As I'm sure you well know, you've got great shots here!

I've never put together a portfolio like this, so I'm not sure if my commentary is aligned with your needs, but here it is for your review.

I'm not sure I understand the relation of the two photos in #3, #14, and #24. The others seem to flow nicely but those stand out as a bit starkly different, left to right.
Maybe 21.1 and 24.1 are better suited together as 'fitness' photos?
I'd be inclined to put 21.2 and 22.1 together as environmental portraits.

My only critique would be to not put photos side by side as you do in #27, for example. Keep each picture separate, to be enjoyed on its own.

Hey Mike, I always liked your work, I wish you'd post more often. Great stuff here, I also like the breadth of different styles you show. The first photo makes me think of Danny Pudi.

I'm going to disagree with Jim and fstop slightly. I think putting multiple images together is fine, especially if they kinda tell a little 'story', so to speak. There are a couple that I think are a little disjointed though.

3
21, 22 - put basketball dude with Malaysia dude. and the two models together
29

5 - actually OK together, but I might stick with just two images, more in the format of #4 and 6, but not sandwiched right between them so as not to be too repetitive on format.

I'm also wondering why some photos are smooshed together with little or no space between them. I remember doing an album and Mr. Anerino telling me to put much more space around the photos to let them breathe. I was trying to squeeze as much as I could in there, and make each picture as big as possible. But I took his advice and gave the photos much more space around them and really like the result. I think I have that up here somewhere from a couple years ago. I could dig it up, if you'd like.

Oh, and I hope the numbers in the corners aren't planned for the final print?

TFS

Thanks for the feedback guys!

In pairing up images, I typically looked for obvious pairings, but for some of them I tried to pair similar feelings (like the exasperation in spread 3 or the chaos and excitement of spread 14) or by colors and mood (like the reds and yellows of 16 or the blues and whites in 24). It's good to hear feedback that it doesn't necessarily work.

I keep going back and forth on standalone images or full spreads like I have here. I'm leaning towards spreads because 1. It shows (hopefully) my ability to tie photos together and tell a full story - even if those moments are not related. And 2. I'm putting it together in a high-end book/album, so it would cost twice as much (not an insignificant amount) to double the pages. I'm not against spending that much, I think I would just need more convincing to do so. I could do looseleaf prints or a cheaper/modular album, but I want to stand out in every way I can.

David - I see what you mean about letting the photos breath. When I design wedding albums, I'm all about that - the focus is as much on design as it is the photos. With this, I'm trying to show my work in the biggest, most efficient way. But I understand that sometimes giving a photo space lets you experience it better. I've been considering giving each photo a matte and will likely have to do a couple test prints to decide.

And no - numbers are just for proofing. Won't be in the final print.

Ok. Flipped some stuff around.

Deleted photo in Spread 5:
http://www.mikevillavisuals.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/Travel_-_Editorial_2_PROOFING_05.jpg

Swapped Spread 21 and 22:
http://www.mikevillavisuals.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/Travel_-_Editorial_2_PROOFING_21.jpg
http://www.mikevillavisuals.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/Travel_-_Editorial_2_PROOFING_22.jpg

Redid Spread 23 and got rid of spread 24 completely:
http://www.mikevillavisuals.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/Travel_-_Editorial_2_PROOFING_23.jpg

Which left me with a different final page:

Let me know what you think!

Some great shots. I don't know much about putting together editorial ports, but it seems like too random of a mix to me. Some seem more travel and some seem more commercial but it seems like the target for both would be different, would a magazine editor want to see both? If that is really so, I think it would be stronger to separate the sections. Seems there is at least a travel section, commercial, and journalistic theme to them that would be stronger in more distinct sections. Also I would toss 15 -1 (just some kids off to school? Seems like it is there to show some sort of international travel vibe, but this could be a school in San Francisco or some other local street, not sure what your reasoning for inclusion is) and 27 -2 (the people are clumped and busy at the register and they detract rather than add, if there was just one bartender working in good light, maybe, but the way they are lumped up and just hunched over the machine, so not clean enough of a composition to have as a worthy inclusion IMHO). Also for a professional spread I don't know if I'd lead with the first one, since his face is pretty soft from the motion blur, but not necessarily in a purposeful enough way and makes it seem too snapshot-ish.

Concur with above. Some really nice work here but too scattered for an art director etc... to pick through.

Hey folks! It's been awhile, but I appreciate all of your feedback!

I've simplified things a bit and weeded it down a bit further. It's still a mix of commercial and editorial, but when presenting to magazines I think this will give me a bit more versatility.

Wow, what a great collection/portfolio!

Personally I am not convinced with 41 as a standalone final shot. I'd be inclined to switch 41 and 36. 35 & 41 should fit well together, and I think that 36 is a much stronger standalone shot. Just my 2c worth.

NB: What was your lighting for #4? Looks like a large/close source high on camera right. Perhaps something like a 39" Deep Octa. But it was the colour balance that grabbed me. Normally I would expect the strobe to be much cooler in temp than the golden-hour sun. Unless you had a 1/2CTO or similar gel on your light. The 'grass' around her is cooler as you would expect in open shade. So I'm intrigued as to the lighting setup for this.
