As the title says, Calumet have an offer on at the moment for 2 years 0% interest.

https://www.calphoto.co.uk/category/canon-l-lens-ifc/

Apologies if this has already been shared, I had a quick look but couldn't see a thread.

Interest on a secured line of credit isn't much above 0% these days - although that may change before long.

thought there would be a catch in the price . i.e. hiked prices to compensate for the 0% . but a quick glance a few of the offerings show them to be the same (or close) to WEX and Jessops .

seems a good deal if your in the market for genuine UK spec lens (i.e. not an import)

ok just digging a bit further it seems that WEX are offering the same 0% deal . maybe its underwritten by canon as I don't see it available on Nikon gear

I only saw it on email from Calumet so it's possibly a Canon promotion I've just not seen elsewhere as I'm not shopping at the moment.

I checked the price of the 70-200 F4 IS vs amazon though and it's the same (my girlfriend might get one).

I'm happy enough buying import and saving a large chunk but if you aren't then it's a great offer.

You guys already have better prices than us. It took about 3 or 4 years for the 70-200 I bought ages ago from Amazon US to drop to the same level as the UK

I seem to be having a hard sell on it.

I really like my non IS hence suggesting it and just bought the 2.8 is II. Best option for Gayle is the F4 IS for weight vs quality & cost I think.

I have always found that if I start out talking about a price for an item at 0% interest 'pay in x months time' the next sentance should be "what if I pay cash now?" This generally produces a sizeable discount on the original price. Also take care that the original price is not inflated. In my home country shopping around can produce a wide variation in prices, and often so called discount retailers are the most expensive.

It might make sense for the great whites, but financing a 70-200/4 IS

Why not? Pay-off £33.50 per month and keep the depleting balance of the £805 in a saving account. Makes a few quid for you!

£805 is a fair chunk of cash in the UK, about 4% of the average after-tax take-home salary.

Exactly. While were lucky enough to be in a position to be able to buy even some great whites outright (if we wanted) it still makes sense to take interest free if its the best price.

I'm happy buying grey these days though so will take that extra saving instead.

I doubt there will be much dealer discount if its a canon promotion either.

It doesn't if you can pay it off outright as you'll be adding a credit agreement to your file which does in the end affect your overall credit score.

I'm not particularly familiar with how credit scoring works, but would paying-off the lens not count as a good thing?

I've had difficulty in the past because my credit score was 'thin file', which apparently meant the only credit history I had was my mortgage. I was "advised" to take-out credit cards and loans to improve it!

I will never understand the world of finance, despite working in it...
