It is not as horrible as many say, or at least, mine is not. (I have used it on a D700.) Just avoid shooting in low-light with stars, and avoid architecture, in any light! (Coma is, shall we say, quite interesting, and complex mustache distortion is quite evident.) I very nearly traded mine when I bought my 14-24/2.8G, but I decided to keep it, for a reason I cannot explain. Perhaps it is the build quality? This lens looks like it could be used to break a hijacker's teeth. (Hijacker = robber, in local cop-speak.)
Very few of these still have their hoods, perhaps because the Nikon hood had a bad habit of not staying in place very well. I bought a Fotodiox hood, and it would not stay in place, either. I tend to shoot after sundown, anyway, so have simply used a 77mm-to-82mm step-up ring as a thread protector.
I plan to shoot more with mine during my vacation this month, to help determine whether I should keep it.
Andy Feltham, a UK fine art photographer, used a Nikkor 18/2.8D for a short while, on a Df, and said the distortion can be corrected using the lens profile for the Nikkor 20/2.8D. He has, however, since switched to the 20/1.8G, if I recall correctly, which would be quite understandable.
