Have anybody used Nikon Af-S 80-200 with teleconverters? Is it possible and how is the image quality?

I had this zoom during a short time several years ago.

At short distances I was impressed by the results with the TC20EIII

Nikon D3, 80-200mm f/2.8 AF-S + TC20EIII @ 330 mm, ISO 400, 1/200 sec, f8, handheld.

Nikon D3, 80-200mm f/2.8 AF-S + TC20EIII @ 400 mm, ISO 320, 1/800 sec, f9, handheld.

At long distances I had less experiences, but it seems the IQ is not as good as at less than 15-20m.

I sold the 80-200/2.8AFS because it did not do well at all with teleconverters at long distances - particularly the 20EIII. I did not shoot it up close like Jose has.

I use a 1.7tc with mine. It works fairly well. Focus is still snappy and IQ is good but does degrade a little. I only use it for birding and it's produced good results given my limited ability.

I'm thinking about if I could save some money by buying 1.7 or 2.0 teleconverter instead of buying the Tamron 150-600. I know the reach is smaller with TC but maybe the image quality isn't far from the image quality of the Tamron.
I can get Nikon TC-20E III for about $740 but the price on the Tamron is $1480 here in Iceland.

Bad idea?

I'm shooting mostly dogs and other pets, both portraits and action shoots.

Mu ultimate plan is to get the 300 f/4 and a 1.4 tc, which, as most people say, barely degrades IQ. On my D7100 it would frame like a 630mm. Of course, if you need zoom, then that won't work for you.

This is a very interesting thread to me. I had the exact same question as the OP. I'm traveling to Jamaica and planning to take my D3 with at 80-200 AF-S. I'd like to get a little more reach and thought that getting a 2x TC would work well. My other idea is to get a 70-300 4.0-5.6 VR (cost-wise there is no much difference). This would give me a smaller maximum aperture, but since it is VR I might be able to compensate with a slower shutter speed.

Another option would be to take my D7000 with the 80-200 or the D7K with a TC/70-300 for even more reach, but I really prefer the D3.

Does anybody have any suggestions? I am open to other brands/options but would like to keep the investment sub 1K.

Thank you
