Some friends in the mountains practice the time honored art of making shine.
They were kind enough to let me take a few pictures of their still, with no faces included for obvious reasons Quite an interesting process the mash is put in the kettle over the fire and boiled the steam is piped from it to the middle barrel where the shine is filtered with the heavier particles floating down to the bottom of the barrel. The steam is collected and sent to the condensing coils in the large barrel that is filled with water to cool the shine down and it runs out of the bottom of the barrel into the quart mason jar at the bottom.
They said their product had a rating of between 180 and 195 proof. They allowed me to sniff it and it smelled strong. No taste tests allowed.
Sounds interesting doesn't it, now the truth is this is a still making moonshine but it is sanctioned by the county at an Old Mill Crank Up days. At the end of the 2 days they have to poor out all the moonshine , no keeping any of it.
Thought I would share the picture of an art not seen much today.
Thanks for looking
