I would be using the 70-300L and also bringing a A7II with a Nikon 28mm f3.5 manual lens for static shots. I am only thinking the 50D because of the extra length I would get on the 300 end. I think it will be sunny or partly cloudy at worst.

I would think that cropping from a 6D will give you better results than "reaching" with the 50D. The 50D I owned was fairly grainy and indistinct at anything over ISO 800, making cropping into a 50D image a very difficult proposition most of the time. Given the IQ of the 70-300L, I'd think you could crop half the 6D image away and still wind up with something very usable. Just my 2 cents.

300mm will be rather short for an air show, particularly on full-frame ( I've tried it! ).

So you may need to think about a 1.4 Extender, in which case the increased IQ of the 6D is even more compelling.

Even at 420mm on a 5D, fighters were just small objects in the centre-frame.

I went through my photos from the last time there was a show at Westover in 2012, and I see I was often at 400mm (on a 100-400) with my 7D. So at first glance I would definitely say 300 on full frame will be short. I just don't know how well the 6D will make it up by letting you crop.

Here is my photo gallery: Westover 2012

Keep in mind that most of the shots at 400mm were likely cropped even further to get to the final image.

I can't go this weekend, instead I have my sights on RI in 2 weeks.

By the time you crop the 6D image to equal the 50D, you will be left with about 8MP.

The 6D can do 4.5 frames/sec while the 50D can do 6.3 frames/second.

The IQ of the 6D is definitely better but at the end of the day, the more pixels you can put on the duck (airplane) will sway the discussion towards the 50D.

Have fun shooting

I've been to a lot of airshows...they aren't particularly taxing for an AF unless you are really close. The 6D should have no problem. But as others have mentioned, 300mm is pretty short for a FF. In your shoes I would probably rent a 100-400mm and a 1.4X for the weekend.

Which is better? I have been to R.I. but not Westover. I am closer to RI.

I can get a Tamron 150-600 for $850 but it's not a lens I wanted but if I buy it and sell it after it would be cheaper than renting. Do you think it's worth the hassle?

I would think that a 50d would be the best in this situation. While its IQ is way behind at higher ISOs, since you are shooting an airshow, and Im assuming its during the day, you shouldnt be shooting very high iso and I thinking the length outweighs the bad.

I'd think 50D for the reach & can't see needing a higher ISO then 400. I shoot with both a 1Ds2 & 1D4 using the 100-400 most of the time BUT when the Snowbirds performed the 28-300 was the right lens to use. IF the Blue Angels are there you'll be in the 70 side of the 70-300 for some of their routine but in general you will most likely be near 300 a lot of the time. Keep your shutter speeds in mind. Real Fast for jets, 1/320 or slower for prop planes, and good luck with rotor blur shooting heli's. They require 1/60 or slower for a good result but it's very hard to do well at that SS unless it's in a hover.
I see our CF 18 Demo Team is there so if you get some nice shots of it in action there is a Facebook page that will want to see them. I'll watch to see how you did.

I may just bring both. The 6D, 50D and the Sony A7II along with the 70-300L and a Nikon 28mm shouldn't be too heavy in a backpack. It's suppose to be partly cloudy so hopefully iso won't be too high. I do have a question on exposure. Should I compensate on the plus side to allow for the back lighting?

I expose for the plane & not the general scene. I shoot in Tv mode and rely on my LCD for adding or removing EC as necessary. On dull days that gets changed often as the light constantly changes. This shot was at about the dullest part of the day just after the show started. info is 1D4, 100-400 @ 235 mm, ISO 400, !/200 with +1 stop of EC. I have been as high as +2 EC under some conditions but rarely need negative EC.

One technique I like with display teams is to keep the lens long during the close formation manoeuvres.

Most folk pull-back to capture the whole formation but it's really dramatic to see the alternative of one aircraft in the centre and the rest of the frame filled with portions of others.

If you can beg or borrow something longer than 300mm I think you'd be more satisfied.

I think the traffic is easier at Quonset Point. This year they both have the Blues, but Westover has an F-22 demo. That's an amazing plane, if you've never seen one, you should go.

I think Westover is going to have more warbirds, including a B-17.

I would probably have gone to both, you'll have a great time at either.

The 50D is a better choice for sure. As somebody else mentioned above, you end up with only ~8 MP when you crop the 6D to the same FOV as the 50D. Take the 1.4X TC with you, since it can provide additional reach on the 50D too.
