I like both sets in color and BW.'In the first two, the BW relates the horses thru an additional dimension. The pose is pretty unflattering to the larger horse, though you probably didn't hear a word about it.
In your second set, the color is a bit gentler image, but the BW conversion is strong and effective. I like the contrast in color/luminosity and in size. The BG horse unfortunately detracts.

Thanks Scott - kinda an awkward pose, eh? I might have to break out the little guy cause I LOVE his stoic pose.

I was wondering about that background horse. Part of me was okay with it due to the left right left facing horses and also dark light dark thing going on. But I also thought it detracted from the duality of the two horses.

IMO I'd say that the duality is stronger, so I'll update it.

Well done. Much stronger image/statement.
Check the highlights on the white horses back, adjust if needed, XPost to BW and Nature (but don't expect too much response on Nature...not BW fans)

Thanks for the help, Scott. Yeah I don't think I'll risk the crickets in Nature.

Diggin' the triple juxtaposition of the second set

1) Large vs. small
2) White (light) vs. brown (dark)
3) Facing right vs. left

+1 @ removal of extraneous BG

The only thing I might consider is just a very slight "kiss" of blur to that large area of foregound grass / brush on the right.

Never mind the crickets ... don't post it to get their approval. Post it to SHOW others (umm, they have lurkers too ya know) how it's done.

Thanks Kent!

Talk about polar opposites with those two.

Your Welcome,

This is a very nice piece chocked full of relationships ... worthy of study. It is a wall hangar, imo.

It also strikes me as a very saleable piece ... for those who have a propensity for marketing their work. It will never be in the category of an uber- WOW, that's amazing, nor a "pretty pic" that resonates popularity with the masses ... but for me, it has an ability to "connect" on a different level, due to the relationships involved.

Absolutely - I am fairly certain this is mother/child.

There were pairs all about.

As I thought ... just another piece of the connection that strengthens the image's ability to "connect" relationships.

BTW, in case I forgot to mention it ... nicely done, with much goodness.

Kudo's to Scott also for the assist / direction @ spurring you to bring it up closer to its potential.

Thanks again, Kent!

Thanks for the feedback, Ben! I knew you'd go for the color.

Nah ... YOU nailed the shot. Scott just told you it was worth polishing (with good advice) ... and you listened.

Gotta see the shot, then you gotta get the shot ... then you gotta polish it. Without YOU seeing it and getting it, it never has the chance to exist.

Losing the background horse was a good call, but perhaps some extra space on the left for composition balance?

I think the original has good balance.

It is asymmetrical and relies on the elements @ varying mass and varying tone and varying negative space ... but they still balance very well for me, yet with a more dynamic balance rather than a static balance of symmetrical negative space.

Also, I prefer the larger negative space associated to the direction the mother is headed toward @ "we are going "THIS" way", even if the colt hasn't figured that out yet ... i.e. not too much space for the colt to stray away from the mother ... both in the picture, and in the life relationship @ literal / metaphor.
