I have a "raincoat" that slips over my camera/lens/flash but its' a PITA to use. How water resistant is the 5dmkiii and 28-70 2.8 II? I am photographing a short, small ceremony solo on Saturday. 80% chance of rain and it's all outdoors with no rain plan. Woohoo.

I'm wondering if I need to bring someone along to hold an umbrella over me if it's rainy, or if getting caught in a downpour for a few minutes as long as it's not submerged in water would be okay?

I agree that they are a pain but I would not risk it. First you don't want your camera to die and second, you need that camera to keep working for the whole ceremony.
Bring it.
just my opinion.

It can handle a splash of rain just fine, and only a short amount of time being exposed to the elements shouldn't be too much of a problem. A rain coat is, of course, your safest bet.

What's most annoying for me, but this goes for any camera, is rain drops on your lens.

I shot in the rain recently and broke out the raincoats, they worked well, they were a little challenging, but I got the job done.... I got slightly wet myself as I didn't bring a raincoat for ME

Ive had mine in the driving rain 3-4 times for weddings. Once, the top LCD froze but other than that, its been great. Would I continue to risk it... probably not.

They're supposed to be weather sealed which means they should be able to withstand some rain, but they also say that in order to be fully weather resistant you need a filter on that lens.

I have found that combo to be incredibly water resistant and have had this combo soaked several times with no issues. The water spots on the lens drives me crazy though.

I have used 5D mark II and III in "normal" rain for hours. Cameras and lenses were dripping but worked flawlessly. As long as you do not change the lens or at least wipe with a cloth around lens mount before changing it, preferably under an umbrella, you should not experience any problems.
