Thanks for the shots Tony- I'm thinking that all of the combinations are holding up really well, though that 100-400L II bare... is nice .

Sigma is showing better resolution of the brown feathers sticking up vertically right in front of the birds head. Not sure why they appear so blurry on the 100-400 and 400 prime shots. Maybe wind at this slow of SS. Because the other areas all seem about equal with not much difference.

Tony, these comparisons at 400mm plus 1.4x are very helpful, with a 300 f4L IS in kit, seeing the IQ differences; which isn't much, really gives me pause and think seriously about the 100-400 II and it's utility. I've enjoyed the MFD of the 300, it's use with ext tubes as well, yet with the MFD and IQ of the 100-400II, it's abilities with both Mark III T/Cs, should make for a good partnering with my 70-200 f4L IS.

Thank you for you continued 'comparison' efforts, they are greatly informative!

Cheers,
Jerry

I rented the 100-400 II yesterday and really liked it. I'm trying to talk myself out of it though. Please help!

My buddy Eric Mastilak on here did help somewhat saying his 400 5.6 prime and 300/4's were sharper. I said "Not at 100-299 or 301-399 mm they're not" or something like that.

Thank you for taking the time and trouble to post these comparisons. There doesn't seem to be a great deal of difference between the images on screen and I wondered if this is because of the low res j pegs. However as you have obviously seen the high res original files is the sigma as good as it appears to be, many thanks

This is a great question, thank you for asking it!

I always appreciate hearing the OP's thought as a conclusion to these comparisons. Even if it is posted later, so it doesn't bias the responses from others

It i sometimes hard to tell on my laptop, or my phone. Versus my dual screen desktop where I usually do my own critical comparison. Or using X/Y in lightroom to scroll around, check out of focus areas, etc. Plus the OP usually has been able t spend more time with the images. And in this case, the OP has a much more educated eye than I have!

Thank you for all of the samples! Highly appreciated.

I really appreciate you sharing your observations too arbitrage.

I just started to do wildlife photography in December. After 30+ years as a photographer - since I was 15 - this is the first time I have used a lens longer than 200 mm. I have learned a lot from you, and all of the others here. Thanks for sharing.
