p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Red Cleistocatus Flower

May is the peak flowering time for most cacti, at least in UK glasshouse and house conditions. This one has been flowering for two days, with another bud to perform. The open flower is about as wide as a pencil. The flowers of this genus open only to a limited extent, remaining tubular.

I started off with hand-held daylight shots (Kiron 105mm f11) as the last sunlight of the day became obscured by clouds. The following day I continued, but using flash. For close shots I used my Schneider HM 40mm facing forwards. For the slightly higher magnification it had a Kiron x 1.5 TC behind it. I would like to take more shots with the 40mm, using better support for the camera or lens. All were hand-held, of the same flower, and have been cropped, mostly to excluded OOF white spines.

Thanks, Brian.

Together with e.g. Borzicactus, Cleistocactus (from the German "Kleist") flowers have this tublular form. Some species open out a little wider at the tip.

Really lovely shots Harold. Like the progression of the shots.

Thanks, Birdie.

That flower closed after the second session. Another will open soon, for another chance.
