What is the best / recommended way to attach a black rapid to a Nikon 70-200 2.8, to the foot of the tripod
collar or take off the foot and attach to the threads on the tripod collar?

On my old 300/2.8, I put a 1" clamp on the foot and used that.

Get an Arca collar/foot for your 70-200 and use the clamp on Jason's link above to clamp the dovetail on the foot. This allows you to switch from a BR setup to a tripod setup in an instant. Just make sure your safety screws are engaged on the clamp as well. I'd also use Loctite on the Fasten-R and the 1" Kirk clamp.

If I don't really need to change setups during the day shoot?

I use my br strap with the 70-200 and with the 80-400 quite often. I always screw it straight to the threads of the collar. Why carry the extra weight, plus makes it easier to hand-hold in my opinion. Also - I know the screw isn't coming out and I don't have to worry about having additional plates.

I usually remove the foot, but if I forget and have attached it to the bottom of the foot (I use the RRS replacement foot) I don't worry about it.

is it bad to use the BR on the camera body with a 70-200? It never crossed my mind to use the tripod collar and support it from there....

I looked on the Black Rapid site and they seem to say you could support the camera/lens from either the camera or the lens collar. this is from the Black Rapid site -
My lens has a tripod mount, should I attach my strap to my lens?
The FastenR can be attached to either your tripod mount or your lens ( if equipped with a mount). Some photographers find they achieve a better balance with the FastenR attached to their lens. However, it’s an individual preference and both will work well.

The 70-200 is heavy enough to distort the lens mount.

Yup- if your lens comes with a tripod mount, use it.

(I'm going to have the same problem when I get around to picking up a Sigma 150-600 C)

Be sure you buy this with your strap. It makes it much safer.

I've been wondering about attaching to the collar as opposed to the foot. I'd prefer the foot for convenience (with quick release), but I wonder if the weight might be hard on the foot?

I used the black rapid strap attached to the foot of a Nikon 80-200 2.8 AFS lens and it actually bent the foot, I purchased a Kirk foot/collar for that lens and that worked good.
But now I am using a Nikon 70-200 2.8 with the Nikon collar/foot and was wondering how it would stand up to BR use.
