Bill, that doesn't really narrow down the options. You could visit any spot in a HUGE area, stretching from Denver to Yellowstone to Southern Idaho to Yosemite to Mt. Whitney to the Grand Canyon to Santa Fe to Denver.
There are hundreds of viable routes.
Any of which will offer more scenery than you have time for.
Don't IR cameras work pretty much anywhere?
Expecting complete strangers to plan your vacation is, frankly, nuts. Folks here could write for hours detailing their favorite locations, only to find you 'weren't really interested in that sort of thing' after all. You're going to have to take the time and effort to narrow things down.
When you have specific questions about potential or short-list destinations, please holler. The people here will happily offer detailed, helpful advice.
Until then, ponder and share...
How tolerant of heat and cold are you?
Camping or motels?
'Icons' only, or willing to take the road less traveled?
Redrock?
Bristlecones?
Geysers?
Canyons?
Placid lakes?
Raging rivers?
Lush Forests?
12000 foot peaks?
Your choice of Mojave and/or Great Basin Desert terrain? (Maybe you LIKE the heat!? Hello Death Valley! )
Etc.
A guide book to the American West would be a good start.

If nothing else, go to google maps, Panoramio, etc., or run Google Earth. Turn the images on and browse around for a few hours.
