Yes, the images are noisy, noisy, noisy!.
Here is the secret recipe:
(a) 1600 ISO, a tad underexposed
(b) Pushed in post, from anywhere to 1/2 to 1 and sometimes 1 1/3 a stop.
(c) Heavy crops, e.g. 1/2, 1/3 or even more; making the noise artifacts more prominent by a sort of "zooming in" effect
(d) No noise reduction, before normal final sharpening.
And voila!
I initially thought the noise levels were fine: definitely there, but not distracting. But now I agree with most folks, it is too much! I will be revising them when I get the chance later. But it is a pain!
