p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Light meter and flash percentages

I was pretty sure I had watched a video on Kelbyone where 2 well know photographers took the same shots where one used a light meter and one did not. I can't find that video to refresh myself. Kelbyone support answer was to go search!

From what I recall, 30% flash, as shown on the meter was a good starting point. I think that was using it as fill. I'm wanting to find out starting % for sunlight in front of subject and % for fill, backlight and % for flash and subject all in shade and now, not so much for fill but main light.

Suggestions please.
Thanks.

You are welcome! If you search Joe Brady on youtube he has a bunch of videos showing different uses of the flash, and how to mix ambient with flash..

Here's a good starting point...

30% is good as fill when sun is hitting subject.

50% is a 1:1 ratio between light and shade (ie 1 stop between shade an lit). This is good for when sun is behind person and you want a gentle modeling on the face.

60-70% As above, but heavier modeling. Works very nicely - particularly with a larger, softer source. I'll often aim for this with my work.

It is a good test to find the ratios you like. Mine:

Overcast if there is no direction to the light: 20-30% any more than 30% looks unnatural

Backlit when there is no fill coming into the face: 50% though I tend to get the background look ok and then meter adding flash power to fit the settings

I rarely use flash in full sun other than backlit since it typically produces double shadows. I also never shoot heavy overpower-the-sun type shots since it looks unnatural and usually a bit amateurish imo.

30% is a lot of flash (only about one stop down). 20% is likely better (about two stops down) for fill flash in bright sun. Just using the stops instead of percent may be the best plan to have a better feel about it (with 1/3 stop control available).

See a table at http://www.scantips.com/lights/flashbasics4.html#percent

I'm pretty sure that I saw a good video that explained this at the Sekonic site. They showed the impact of 10, 20, 30% . . . flash to ambient for portraits.
