p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Best compromise for TC on 70-200/2.8 VRII

I'm shooting a D800. I have used the 1.7 TCII on ONE occasion. It was decent quality, and I forget the max aperture. Are the TCIII models worlds better? Would someone suggest using the 1.4TCIII and DX mode...or going for the 1.7 TCIII ??

I just shoot general landscape and scenic items...possibly will start photographing surfers from piers...live in San Diego BTW

Thanks guys!!

70-200/2.8 with 1.7xTC II

use the 1.4 and 1.7 as needed.

I don't think the TC-17 is a compromise at all. This is with a D3, 70-200 and TC-17 wide open. I imagine your results with a D800 would be even better.

Right on. I should've done research...so I take it the TC-14 II or III would *almost* be non-noticeable on this paticular zoom....meaning, of course, 280mm if hardly noticeable when shooting surfers or seagulls from pier.

I have frequently used the TC-20 III on the 70-200 f/2.8 Vr II and have found that it does a remarkably good job when you either need the extra reach and also, surprisingly, when you want to take macro close-ups too.

I also have the TC-17 II but, if the light is bright enough for AF, I feel that I get crisper results from the TC-20.

I also stop-down by one stop if possible when using any TC: doing that makes a big difference to quality and so does using a Converter which lets you correct for CA.

Technique makes all the difference with both the TC17 and 20.

Okay, if I decide to try some Moon shots, what is better choice? Haha I'm a perfectionist

Shoot from on the Space Station perhaps?

Otherwise you need the greatest magnification, and therefore FL, that you can get.

And focus manually on the moon itself because, if AF is on, the lens will refocus on something like telephone wires or nearby tree branches (which you never noticed in the darkness but which the camera did!).

Been there, done that!

Prefer the TC-17E II over my TC-20E III on my 70-200 f2.8 VR II
Thinkin' the TC-20E III was made for fast primes, loves my 200 f2
