I'm sure this has been brought up before. I've always been a prime shooter but over the years I've changed lenses a few times and now finding myself looking at the new 24-70II. Seems it would be great for a lot of different scenarios. My current lineup now is a 28 is, 50 art, 85L, 100L and the 70-200 II. I feel I'm lacking on the wide angle and would be great to not have to switch out lenses so much during ceremonies and etc but I'm afraid Id miss shooting with the prime too much.
So sink the money into the 24-70 or just go with a 35L and stay with prime lol

We just took delivery of a second 24-70L II yesterday, so yeah ... I'm a fan.

I shoot solo (often) with two bodies (sometimes three). Zooms are vital for a single shooter. With two photographers the risk of missing something with primes goes down, and focal lengths can be strategized between two shooters.

That said, plenty of top-of-the-list International wedding photographers shoot solo with primarily primes and seem to be doing well with it. Everyone's got their comfort level.

But if your tempted to try a 24-70, log on to LensRentals or order one for a weekend.

The 24-70 mk II has quickly become my favorite lens. But I still use the 35L for my "getting ready" shots.

I think there is a time and place for both. Ditching one for the other might be a regret. Save your pennies and get both!

I think it depends on how you shoot.

I'm a single shooter and never use a second, and have an all-prime setup. The 24-70 is a great lens, but I can get what I need with what's on my camera. I, however, also don't shoot too wide....so my personal style lends itself to not needing a zoom like that.

I shoot alone also but I'm at the point where it sucks changing lenses a lot lol. Maybe I'm getting lazy and the zoom will just make me more lazy.

I agree. And if you're in the market for a 24-70 II I'm getting rid of mine (because, Nikon).

There are 2 or 3 threads on this already where others have done the same. A few of us prime shooters tried. I went back to primes, as did someone else. (don't recall who) The 24-70II's a great lens. IMO, it's best for outdoor stuff from sun up to sun down. I didn't really care for it in low light, but I was shooting a 5DII. It just all depends on your needs, situations, and shooting habits. If you love sub 2.8, I'd say don't waste your time. Personally, I'd say consider the 24L and 35L instead.

24-70II is a great lens. Sharpness crushes the 24... but alas it will never be a 1.4... which is why we own both. If you can only have one or the other, stay with the prime. I'm more committed to the photo when I shoot primes than I am with standing still and a zoom.

24-70mm L II is great lens. I have used it but never own one. I'm still using my reliable 28-70mm L for wedding.

A couple of my associates have the Nikkor 24-70 and gripe about it. I think the images are fine. Not sure what the complaint is.

That Canon II really is something. The AF speed, the sharpness, the lighter weight. Really puts the legacy model in the dust (as the invoice would indicate).

Like others, I'm really getting used to keeping the lens swapping to a minimum. I'm almost only using the 50mm for getting ready as well as detail shots at the reception hall. As I mostly focus on second shooting, I find the 24-70 II and then the 70-200 II complement my shooting style nicely.

With primes, I never found shots at 1.4 were consistently sharp enough. And I didn't want the handicap of a prime just so I could shoot at f2 vs 2.8

I hardly ever shoot wide open, but I very often shoot at 1.6-2.2.

I rented a Nikon 24-70 a few times.

Just the mental process and the muscle memory/zooming etc meant there was a bit of a learning curve for me after 10 years of primarily shooting primes.

It was a nice change of pace.

Still undecided, but likely will go with one and the 70-200 as well.
