p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Tamron 150-600 vs Sigma Sport 150-600?

Has anybody had a chance to do any comparisons with these two lenses? I am really interested. I have a chance to acquire a Sigma but I am just not sure it is worth the additional money. Biggest reason would be the weather and dust sealing.

Thanks All!

Thanks Nate. I tried doing a search and it kept kicking back zero results and I think I typed about everything! Also, I am more interested in the S version.

I bought the C version expecting it to be less than stellar.

I am so impressed with it, I have no desire to buy the S version. you may want to consider the cheaper option.

There are few times in my life where I would ever say that. This is one of them.

The reason I am going with the heavier option is not for the optics but for the build and weather resistance. I use this lens a lot at baseball and football fames and there are times where I am in a dust cloud one second and a rainstorm the next. I am worried about moisture and dust getting inside the lens and hope this will help alleviate that problem.

The Sigma Sport is a beautiful, well-built lens. If you purchase it I'm sure you will have many years of enjoyment from it.I had the chance to use the Tamron for a few hours couple of months ago, shooting baldies, on a very cloudy and overcast day. I shot with my Nikon D610. The response of the Tamron was great, the weight was not noticeable, the images between 500-600mm @ F6.3 were soft - due in part to lighting of that day. same evening , I went to my local store to see if they had the Sigma 150-600mm in stock, they did so they reserved it for me, they could not give an ETA on arrival, so I went ahead and processed the reservation. To my surprise three weeks later my Sigma 150-600mm Sports arrived. The weight is quite noticeable, adjusting your posture with the lens, will be helpful as well. I will also mention that using a Black Rapid or Carry Speed Strap attached to the tripod foot on the lens will come in handy or you can mount a gimbal head to a monopod, if you are out shooting for several hours. Images from this lens are sharp from 150mm to 600mm, I have shot in decent light to overcast all day light and images are sharper than that of the Tamron. The AF response is very fast much faster than the Tamron. The build and weather seal is a very big plus.

Thank you sir for your eval. I have both in my possession right now, oops! I am really having a hard time justifying the Sigma for the extra $$ and the amount I will use it. We shall see. Thanks again for your evaluation.

My problem is I need something big to use while my wife uses her 500 f4. I am heading for Brooks Falls to do bears next year. I can 'borrow' her 500 and use my 70-200 but what do I use for those in between shots? If I go 80-400 I still need the big lens when we travel together for eagles in Iowa and birds in TX. Maybe buying the 80-400 and then rent the 150-600 for those other times is the way to go.
Wonder how the 80-400 would work with a 2X?

I can't say I'd recommend it at all. The 1.7x worked better than expected for sure but pretty heavy IQ deterioration relative to bare. The AF speed was also surprisingly good in moderate to good lighting.

Results can be good with the 1.7. Here's an example:

I posted a quick comparison between 150-600 Sigmas, Tamron and some Canon primes few weeks ago in Canon forum. Including full size samples and RAW files.

https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1369515

Compared at shorter (birders) distance + some quick observations.

I'd opt for Sigma S, the IQ advantage above 500mm is visible and even more pronounced at longer distances. However, if you are Canon shooter I'd buy from seller with good return policy due to not exactly convincing AF accuracy and consistency of both Sigmas (S was definitely more consistent than C), while Tamron nailed the focus >90% shots even in AF-C. But as stated in my post, I hadn't enough time to do any AFMA settings.

Did you use a dock on the sigma?

The comparison was done at local photography event and my time with every lens was limited to ~15 minutes. No time to do any AFMA settings nor play with dock.

I don't want to make any categorical conclusions from this limited time and Canon 1D bodies are more often reported to have AF consistency issues with Sigmas than 5D and mainstream bodies.

But my Canon lenses were very consistent in back/front focusing (if the settings was actually necessary) before AFMAed and Tamron was spot on (maybe just lucky copy which coped well with my 1DIV).

Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with AF performance of Sigmas on Nikon bodies, maybe they are not plagued with those AF inconsistency issues and calibration is enough for proper function.
