This looks fairly legit. Let's hope it is a solid budget performer the way the 40mm 2.8 pancake is.

Looks a bit like the 40/2.8 pancake lens.

Hope they added a few more blades to the aperture.

I'm glad they didn't follow the route of the recent mid-tier prime updates and throw IS into the mix plus a 100% price mark-up.

If the image quality is on par with the 40mm STM, and as tough and reliable, then I think it will slay the 40 f/1.4 regardless of the half-stop.

Fastest prime in recent history, too? Since the 85mm II at least.

I'd buy this in a heartbeat to supplement the 50/1.2.

6 lenses in 5 groups is the same as the old one, innit? So the optics may just be the same, which kinda obviates the need to upgrade for me (though the outside look is much nicer, that much is certain). But if this is legit, I guess we'll learn soon enough...

No, the "optics" will be all new. You don't have to change the design of a lens or its number of elements to improve its performances. The kind of glass, the shape of the glass, the manufacturing tolerances, etc... there are plenty of different ways to improve performances.

And given how average if downright problematic for modern cameras the current 50mm f1.8 II is, I'm pretty certain Canon will have improved the performances by a very significant margin.

I'm expecting performances at f2.8 on par with the other 24, 28, 35, 40mm primes, and at f2 around the 35mm IS USM, possibly a bit worse - or why not even better.

They probably only did one of the two (the 100% price markup).

Its offshore made siblings--EFs 24 2.8 STM and EF 40 2.8 STM--have MAPs of S149 and S199 respectively. I suspect the EF 50 1.8 STM will be made in the the same factory and priced similarly. A Japan made version with ring-USM, distance window, IS would cost several times more.

Looks like it's the real deal. Dpreview has the news. $129. 7 circular blades compared to 5 on the mark 2.

Looks like a sweet option. Good job Canon!

Canon's been knocking it out of the park with their entry level lens options the past couple years.

OK, I eat my own words here - the MTF chart is identical. So it's still a very meh lens, only with better flare resistance, slightly better bokeh, and much much better operational qualities. Not too bad, but it probably won't touch even the 40mm pancake at f2.8, and that's a little bit sad.

EDIT : eating my own words a second time : the MTF charts aren't identical. They look similar, but they aren't exactly the same for some reason.

I think that you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between this lens at f/2.8 or narrower and the 40/2.8, 50/1.4, or the old 50/1.8 I/II. Except in terms of bokeh shape, of course.

But sharpness? No problem. Hopefully flare resistance and wide-open contrast has been improved too.

Past f4, not doubt this new one will perform well, just like the older one. But at f2.8 ? Photozone, Lenstip, The Digital Picture's tests all match my personal experience (three 40mm and two 50mm f1.8II tested), and the 40's just better. And this new 50 is still likely to be very meh at f2 - meaning that, basically, both Canon and Nikon are still lacking a good 50 below f2.8 - but I suppose this could finally come with another, new 50 IS USM. One thing though is that the 40mm pancakes were a lot more consistent in terms of sample variation - this is an area where I suppose this new 50 could be a lot better than the older one and could possibly more consistently match its theoretical performance.

Still, it's the first Canon 50 with a decent AF system ! Hourra !
