p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Why I upgraded my D800 to a D810

In case anyone is contemplating this upgrade, I created a short post about my reasons for the switch. I sold my D800 for $1700 Canadian in April so it cost me about $2000 Canadian to make the upgrade. I felt the cost was worth it, YMMV.

Nice concise review. I agree with the U1 and U2 user modes. I just don't see why they can't include this as it is so much easier than fumbling through menus and setting up other buttons (which I would rather use for other uses) for so called quick access to the user memory banks.

Hey Mike,

A very nice and intelligent sounding list, and it's many of the reasons why I sold my D800 and replaced it with a D810. I will say one thing about your write up, I do think you should clean up the language in it a bit. For example when you spoke about wifi at the end, the rough language ends up taking away from an article that sounds very intelligent.

Jim

Thank Jim, point taken and rough language removed. I was just venting my frustration at Nikon

Nice article.
Seems you pretty much listed all the changes.

Funny though, I actually now look at the unlimited buffer, compared to my old D800e, as a curse! The D800e would limit me, but now when shooting wildlife I can end up with three times the shots at the end of the day.

I was originally going to get the D810 as a replacement for my D7100 and use it and my D800e. However, when shooting the two side-by-side, the shotgun shutter noise just scared too many animals. So, I ended up selling the D800e and getting a second D810 for consistency. When I'm feeling rich again and want a smaller camera I'll take a look at the D750.

Specifically, I listed the changes that matter and those that don't.

How can it be a curse? Yes, you take more shots but I would rather have that than miss a golden opportunity because my buffer was full.

The D810 is definitely much quieter.

Just about all the reasons I upgraded...would really like exposures longer than 30 secs though...can be a huge PIA at times.

In "bulb mode" the D810 will allow you to leave the shutter open longer than 30 seconds.

It's funny, when I upgraded my D800 to a D810, I figured I'd keep my 800e as a backup. Within a week it was obvious I wanted two D810s instead! I'd say it's the best camera Nikon has ever made (and I've owned a few).

Sure, I just wish I didn't need to use a remote trigger. Why can't I set 5 minutes on the shutter? The 30 second limit is arbitrary.

I know, and use it frequently, but it'd be nice to have more timed shutter releases already built into the camera.
