I think there is some confusion here. Positioning plates are widely used for studio macro, often for focus stacking, and usually with dead insects.
Rare use in the field might be for resting insects on a cold morning.
Most focusing on active insects is by your body movement.
I have a Manfrotto 454 which I have not used for at least two years. Those who do studio focus stacking say that the Manfrotto does not have fine enough control over its movement along the rails.
