Not totally scientific, but fun. Here are 3 shots, one with the 100-400II+1.4TCIII, one with the 600II and one with the 600II +1.4TCIII. All shot wide open with ISO varied. I think this one should be easy but take a guess as to which is which. If you don't like guessing then just enjoy papa eagle with a stormy background perched on the cliff.

Answers are below in pane 19. If you want to guess then don't look there!!

That is a fine portrait, Geoff. If you were not doing so well, I wouldn't bother giving you suggestions for improvement, but I'd like to see you get even better:

(1) Exposure: whites are hot.
(2) Framing: feels a bit awkward now. Not easy to suggest a better way off the bat, but there must be one. See what you can do if you play with it a bit.

I have to agree with 3,1,2.

But I think that they are all amazing.

Not what I shoot (because we don't have any locally that I know of) but I'd be happy to have shot any of them with those results.

Thanks Peter,

Hmmm...Whites are showing fine in my software. Well under blown. Turn down your monitor brightness

I'll play with the crop a bit.

Now tell me which is which, this should be easy.......oh and can you tell me which camera this was shot with

Gotta go by what you see, not by some stinkin' software.

600II + 1.4 is 3, 600II is 1 and 100-400 II is 2. Not bad at 1/5 the price and 3/8 the weight.

My guess, in descending order of quality is: 3 - 600II; 1 - 600 + TC; 2 - 100-400+TC

Normally I agree with you amigo but the whites appear just right to me. Might be time to recalibrate your monitor.

Fantastic photos A! I too would guess 3 1 2. Though, 3 may be the 600 + TC since there appears to be more focal length compression in the photo.

#2 looks like it has some blown whites to me as well. Especially noticeable in the 100%. The others look ok.

#3 looks the sharpest to me. A lot less artifacts around the edges.

Updated with the answers. I thought this one would be fairly easy and almost everyone got it right...At least I think you guys did as most didn't list what they thought would be the highest to lowest quality But I'll assume you meant 600II as best, 600II +1.4 2nd best and 100-400+1.4 worst.

If so then EXIF is:
1: 600 +1.4TC 1/1600, f/5.6 ISO 320 shot on 1DX
2: 100-400+1.4TC 1/1600 f/8 ISO 640 on 1DX
3: 600 at 1/1600 f/4 ISO 160 on 1DX

100-400+1.4TC does fairly well. Still better quality with the 600II as we would all hope for. Of course a lot of what we pay for is more to do with f/4 and not always IQ. If I could have got closer it would have been nice to try 100-400 bare lens but I didn't want to scare dad off the cliff.

No eggs were hatched last evening, I'm heading off now to see if one hatched.

2, 3, 1 for sharpness. The rest of the exposure etc can be worked with.
