Amazing how quick Ospreys are between their initial flop into the water (and I mean FLOP -- never really graceful) and when they are up and flying with even a big fish. Spectacular birds! You can see just how quick they are by how little their initial "cannonball" wake has expanded.

Good action sequence! They must be quite strong to submerge themselves that far and emerge, water-logged and laden with substantial fish-load...

That's a nice sequence. The first one resembles a feathered shark!

somehow I don't think that those were the worst five seconds...I think a minute or so later was pretty un-fun
great sequence!

Almost certainly true if they don't "pass out" once out of the water for that long.

Wow, I didn't see it when I looked at it originally, now all I see is a feathered shark fin... funny things brains :-)

Very nice sequence. The third is my pick for the composition and bird coming at you.

Jesus - that fish is big enough for me to eat! Very nice series, particularly the first one with him almost totally submerged.

Great action it's not easy to follow the dive and get that splash .I do disagree with your term flop the fact that there is no wake means they enter the water like a bullet very aerodynamic

Michael

I'm pretty sure but I'll have another look at my photos... actually, I don't think they enter the water in a very aerodynamic way as say cormorants or terns hit the water with usually a very big splash - they certainly would get terrible scores at the olympics since I really think they pretty much do a belly flop.

I'd be willing to meet you 1/2 and say that it is a fairly aerodynamic belly flop ;-)
