The Sonoma Coast is pockmarked by hidden coves, many requiring a difficult climb down sheer trails studded with poison oak. Access is occasionally aided by fraying ropes fixed to stakes or trees, left by abalone hunters in pursuit of less picked-over reefs.
The young, nimble, and slightly foolhardy, like me, climb down into these coves in the dying light with several thousand dollars worth of fragile glass and electronics to chance the rocks and ocean surge.
