p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Looking for advice D80 - D7200 lens help

I recently got a D7200, upgrading from a D80 w/18-155 lens.
I also have a Nikon 80-400 D-ED. Which I will sell to get the next appropriate lens.
My issue is I shoot a lot of sports Water polo, Lacrosse. The 400 is nice for close in but too heavy and 80 mm is to far for other options.
I like the new 18-300 G VRII, but reviews on it have been split on the sharpness at 300. Plus cost!
Thoughts?
18-200 plus a 1.7 teleconverter? or other options I haven't thought of yet
Thanks for any opinions.

Really depends what your budget is. I just sold my 1.7xII to a guy with a 80-200mm/2.8 using the D610 and I was really surprised how quick and accurate it was, especially with the sun pretty much set by the time he arrived.

Even if you could use a TC-1.7 with a 18-200, you would get terrible IQ. Look at a 300 f4 to use with a TC if you must use one, or a 70-300 VR for the long end if you are on a budget. The wide end is easy if you are shooting f3.5 already- the newest version of the 18-55 is fantastic for the money.

No way I'd put a TC on the 18-200mm. A 70-300mm would be a better low budget choice.

If you are shooting indoors you will need a fast apature lens. Consider used 3rd party 100-200f2.8

A TC17 eats up 1.5 stops of light. An 18-200mm is already at f5.6, so is the 70-300mm. That puts your effective aperture at something like f9. It will be too dark to focus. Ain't going to work. Your options are 70-300mm VR, 70-200mm f2.8 VR with TC17, 300mm f4 with TC17. There's an old saying with lenses which is still true: Fast, Long, Cheap. Pick any two, but you can't have all three.

Any thoughts on just going 18-300?

Good chance the high resolution of the D7200 will quickly show the flaws of that lens. You bought a very high level camera. Why are you crippling it with cheap lenses

while i own/use high-end primes for portrait, studio, low-light, and shallow DOF shooting, i usually carry either a 18-300 on DX bodies, or a 28-300 on FX for walk-about or action shooting.

not being a pixel-peeper, i'm most interested in the content of the images i capture and the emotions they offer. but then again my images only grace websites, magazines, brochures, press releases, et al, not large framed prints.

with that in mind, i've found these Nikon superzooms very useful in being able to grab images on-the-go that i might have missed while changing lenses. and none of my clients have ever indicted they were unhappy with the IQ of shots taken at 300mm.

convenience/speed vs getting every possible IQ advantage... let each of us decide depending on need.

I purchased a D7100 (up from a D90) last year and use a 16-85 and 70-300 VR (both Nikons). While not the sharpest lenses available, they are plenty sharp to satisfy my needs (mostly landscape), and both are fairly lightweight, which becomes more important the older I get.

I have tried the Sigma 17-70 and Tamron 17-50 and like them both, but not as much as my 16-85. I have heard that the 18-140 VR is pretty good if you need a one lens solution, but don't know about the 18-300.

None of the DX lenses are going to provide great quality at full focal lengths, but you should try them to see if they meet most of your needs.
