So, i just picked up a Nikon FM, and then came across a 28mm f/3.5 non-ai lens....so i grab it for like next to nothing, and figure i'll use it on my FM (since the AI tab will flip up out of the way to allow non-ai lenses)....then i think i'd like to use it on my D3/D700.....so i get the lens today, grab a file, and start filing away the aperture ring, so it will pick up the AI tab....
so i put the lens back together, and put it on my D700, and it doesn't even pick up the AI tab anyway! It totally misses it. The thickness of the aperture ring is thin enough, that the ring fits UNDER the AI tab....literally misses it by about 1/32" or less..........so i didn't even need to AI it....
I'm wondering how many other non-ai lenses are like this!? I've always avoided them, b/c people say "THEY WON'T FIT ON MODERN BODIES!"....well now that i know that could be crap, i may start shopping for some non-ai glass!
Anyone else ever run into this before?
These photos are shown on my FM, but it's the exact same scenario on my D3/D700

Here's a view of the 28mm next to a 55mm 3.5 AI....please excuse the crudity of this one lol...but you can see the AI version actually has a raise tab to pick up the AI connection, but the thickness of the aperture ring is the same....it makes me wonder if the whole "non-ai wont mount on modern SLR's" is just a myth....
