Going on a cross country drive shortly and plan on camping Yosemite for a few days. Have my finger on the trigger for the 15-30, anyone have one yet? Likes Dislikes?

Just theoreticals here, but I can think of two reasons why a 16-35/4G VR would be a better choice:

1. It's smaller and lighter.
2. It can be sealed with a front filter.

If you plan on making use of the 15mm end, or need f/2.8, then you can probably work around those two. IQ certainly isn't lacking with the Tamron!

I like having the 2.8 but I guess with the D750 the speed isn't so important. I'd like as wide as possible.

I went to my local camera store to get the feel. The moment I put it on my D810 I instantly realized its massive size and weight can't work for me.

FWIW, I just obtained the new Tammy. It's a big, honkin lens and it's kind of goofy looking with the big, bulbous nose. But, my initial impressions are that it's going to produce some very nice images on my d8xx bodies.

I've only been playing with it inside the house, though, so I haven't had a chance to see what the photos look like for landscapes and such. But, I like it and, being an optimist, I think that it will give me some new ways to do my landscapes and cityscapes.

It's just a feel that I'm getting from playing with it. The focus seems fast and accurate on the d810, even in poor light and I like the way it balances on the camera. That's hardly a good review of the pros and cons of the lens, so it's definitely a case of YMMV.

I have my eyes on 15-30 as well. Am renting it for my upcoming Olympic trip to test it out before i own it. You will need a fast lens if you're into astrophotography

I don't own one yet, but it's the number one lens on my list for my D810.

Add me to the want list. I shoot a lot of car shows and this guy looks great for those wide angle shots right up to the headlights/details.

Since you already have the 20/1.8G, why not save $850 and get the well-respected Rokinon/Samyang 14/2.8? Fast, wider than the Tamron, smaller and lighter, plenty of performance for the D750.

This lens makes the 14-24 feel small and light...

I recently used this inside the uss midway and if reminded me why vr on a 2.8 lens is nice. I've been very happy with it so far though like the nikon 14-24 it's big and heavy.

I bought one and haven't given it a good workout yet but playing around with it the lens is pretty amazing.

Quick couple of snaps.

Yep, I'm another one that's got it on the short-list for this/next month.

I'm off to Iceland (3 weeks) and Abu Dhabi (4 days) in June and it has to be either this Tammy, the 16-35/4 or just the Zeiss 21mm. I have the Zeiss but I think I'll want faster and wider for Iceland and Astro (if there is any in June, with 22-24 hrs daylight the chances are slim to none) !

At the moment the Tamron is a clear leader for me. Spanks the 16-35/4, matches the new Canon 16-35/4 and 14-24 ... and all for US$1,100, however there'll be another $400 for filters and filter holder.

Excellent test vs Canon 16-35/2.8 and 16-35/4 here : http://dustinabbott.net/2015/04/three-way-shootout-part-2-resolution/

The issue for me is the weight not the size. At 1.1kgs that's hefty penalty for a backpacker - though Iceland at least will be a mix of car/hiking.

This is likely the nicest zoom Tamron has ever made; the shots above just add to that, particularly the bokeh vs. say the 24-70/2.8 VC (no onion balls).

But the weight and that bulbous element, and with it no easy way to add filters; the eventual front filter solution will just add to the weight and bulk, and won't help protect the lens.

Great lens. Had it for a couple of months now. Sent back the Nikon 16-35 (which is a great lens) and kept this Tamron Didn't need both. Nothing bad about it. Serious build quality. All the wimps here complaining about the weight...... ;-) ...huh.......I carried the Tamron 150-600 on my D750 with just a hand strap on a 9 mile hike in the hills. np Then again it helps to be 6'5" and in shape!

Just adding some humor guys. Relax

I went in to buy one today ...... and came out with the Tokina 16-28/2.8 instead. I tried both the Tamron 15-30 and Tokina 16-28 side by side, exact same location and exact same (manual) exposure settings. Whilst both lenses were very sharp in the centre there was a distinct advantage to the Tokina on the borders and a visible advantage in distortion too. I was shocked and couldn't really believe it after all the positive reviews I've read of the Tamron.

It's always possible that this wasn't the best copy of the Tamron 15-30 but as it was the last Nikon mount left in the shop (they are in great demand - here in Shanghai) there wasn't another copy to compare it to. My results being substantially different from those on The Digital Picture. So either I have a great copy of the Tokina, they had a great copy of the Tamron, I had a poor copy of the Tamron or they had a poor copy of the Tokina !

I'll start a new thread once I've sorted out the shots I took in the camera mall and some field shots but it saves me about 300g in my backpack (on my scales it's 813g with both caps, I'm not sure if they have managed to reduce the weight because I know my scales are accurate but this is over 100g lighter than most reviews quote - and can be felt when having both lenses in the hand at the same time) and is also substantially smaller.
Some people may find the VR (VC) of the Tamron indispensable, but I was getting sharper shots with the VR/VC-less Tokina than the supposedly 4 stop VC of the Tamron (1/100, f5.6, ISO 800). Build quality looks identical.

Photozone seems to back up my short in-shop testing, soft corners at f2.8 so maybe not so good for the Astro guys and the Tamron a clear winner there, however from f4 a substantial improvement and at f5.6 onwards, excellent.

I'm hardly ever a spur-of-the-moment buyer, I've been back and forth 3 times this week to a shop to check out a US$100 day-use backpack ! However the startling difference in the borders/corners sold me. I've bought this lens for 3 weeks in Iceland .... if I'm not happy before I leave in ca. 3 weeks time I'll be selling it and trying to buy, a better copy, of the Tamron. But at the moment that's looking unnecessary.

Now to find the Fotodiox Wondapana 150mm filter set (not 100mm as I wrongly assumed). Lots of good Chinese versions too, Nisi (always make good stuff) and Haida for sure, probably others.

Here are some links for anyone interested :

B&H (4.5 stars from 106 reviews for the Nikon version and 4.5 stars from 83 reviews for the Canon version), it's selling for the amazingly low price of US$629 on B&H (cost to me here was US$685 whilst the Tamron I had gone in for was US$1,093) - I spent the, um, 'savings' on a Sony 28/2 for the A7

Photozone : http://www.photozone.de/canon_eos_ff/595-tokina162828eosff

Here on FM ! (score 9.1 from 7 reviews, some didn't like the lens cap - same type as the Tamron, and a couple thought it flared, note than other WA zooms ? We'll see) : https://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=424

It's on the short list for me as well but I can't help cringing when figuring out filters all over again (and cost) vs. the 16-35mm I have no with screw in's and easy 4x6 grad filters. Weight is kinda whatever, I'm not hiking Everest with it.

The only real concern with the Tokina's image quality is the flaring; I've seen examples when looking at it in the past, and if you have the sun or another bright light in the frame, you're going to see it.

That said, the lens is reputedly very sharp, which your impressions confirm. Only other complaint, and this is minor with a UWA zoom (though pertinent if comparing to the 17-35/2.8D or 16-35/2.8L II for event work) is the AF speed and accuracy. But for most UWA work, just the fact that it can AF is a plus I'd think .

I think it's supposed to be faster and just as accurate as the 14-24, and apparently better flare control too.

Just from one review, not sure how widespread that is!
