p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Flanders Fields

Gini and I were taking pictures of the poppies beside the highway and the wind was blowing them around. The poem Flanders Fields came to mind as I was trying to time my shots for the lull in the wind. I am wanting others to look at it and see if it can be improved.

I had to take the photo using f8 because of the wind I couldn't bring my aperture any smaller. I have burned down the greens by .38 stop to minimize the background highlights. Is it enough?

I am thinking about having this printed and hung.

Thanks for looking

Walt

Very nice shot Walt.

I think I would try to go a little further if you can. I'm not sure what caused it but I'm seeing some fringe around the edge of the flower and that might become exaggerated by dropping down further.

Another thought if I may is to change your text to black. It would be easier to read and also play off from the black inside the flower.

Jim and other are much better at this than I so take what I say with a grain of salt.

Thank you for taking the time to respond.

I tried reprocessing to get rid of the fringe, not as aggressive.

I thought playing off of the red would work but is too hard to read, so I changed to black as suggested.

This is the new one

Yep, I think the black text looks much better.

In your attempt to make the fringe go away you lost a little detail in the flower.
I'm not very good at this type of stuff and I don't want to steer you wrong so I'll leave that to the others here. I hope Jim stops by because he's very good with this type work and can give you some great advice.

BTW... That is a great poem. I haven't read that in years.

Very nice. I like the detail in the flower.
And I like the filing of the space with such a great poem.
Red/green tends to be a difficult combo for reading but a nice aesthetic.

Are you guys referring to the bit of haloing seen easiest upper left flower 11 O'clock?
Still present but less in second. Doubt it will show printed but you will need different sharpening vs web presentation at that point. You could spend some time at a several pixel level working on a fix. Not worth it.
Bottom edge of the flower is clearly softer but not an issue overall.

What size are you planning to print?

Yeh I was bummed about loosing the flower detail, but I couldn't seem to keep it and minimize the fringe.

Interesting read on the history of the poem and its author if you have the time someday.

What size
...Show more

I was mainly working on the haloing (fringe) at the seven O'clock area, still has a tiny bit. Did't notice the other until you mentioned it.

Glad that you don't think it will show in print.

I plan on printing 8x12 most likely or 11x17.

Walt,
are you doing the printing or sending it out?
what is the medium and likely viewing distance?
how large is the flattened file size?

Scott,
I plan on sending it out, I don't print enough to justify a printer.
It is going to be on luster paper, with a viewing distance of between inches if the people want to look at it closer,to 5 or 6 feet.
The flattened file is 105 meg.

Thanks
Walt

you know even if someone gets up close, only a photographer or printer who notice the earlier halo
should be fine
11/17 sounds better to me, without knowing the space it is going into. Are you wanting people to be able to read it at 5-6 feet, or step in closer?

I'd suggest selecting the background and boosting the gamma. With a darker green background, white lettering may be easier to read than red or black.

Walter; Nice image, great poem. I like the suggestion on print size (7X11) and Karen's on playing with background. Do not be afraid to play in blend modes as it is non-destructive. Jim

I was hoping to draw them closer to read the poem.

Thank you Jim for chiming in, I did play with the background and this is the result.
