p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Printing Black and White

Gentlemen,
I have just purchased a new Canon Pixma MG7520 printer and I am having difficulty printing Black & White prints.
This printer has Pigment Black, Black, Grey and the regular C, M, Y colors.
When I print B&W images (processed with Lightroom 5.7) it seems that the printer does not use the black cartridges because the output is not black.
The output is the same regardless of the setting of the "Grayscale Printing" switch.
I use Canon Matte Photo Paper and the printer driver is setup accordingly.
To be honest I am disappointed with the results so far.
I would really appreciate if anyone could point me to the correct setup,
Thanks,
Persio.

Just out of curiosity, what is your black value on screen?

Tim,

Black value as indicated by Lightroom is R=0, G=0, B=0.

Is this what you meant?
Tks,
Persio.

I have both the Pro 9500II and 9000II so while I cannot address your model here are somethings to check.
1) are you printing from your editor prog(Ps, Lr) printer dialog box or from Canon MP Navigator? What controls your print settings?
2) Is Printer setup correct i.e, setup, media, paper size Color Intensity Print quality...?
Let me know and I will go from there.
Dan

Yes, looks pretty dark to me. Guess that would have been too easy.

Dan,

I use Lightroom to process my raw files and to generate my B&W JPG images for printing.
I use QImage Studio Edition to print with the following setup:
- Let Printer Driver manage color
On the Canon Printer driver I select:
- Canon Matte Paper and paper format (letter)
- Grayscale printing
- High Quality printing

the printed output is of excellent quality except for the brownish tint as opposed to pure black and gray tones.
Thanks,
Persio.

Has the above allowed you to print a b/w fine before?

Persio,
1) Have you tried letting Ps/Lr handle printing versus printer?
2) have you tried keeping printing at "color" even though b/w? On my Canons I never select b/w.
3) do you select "No Color management"/None in you profiles versus ICM and the other one?
Canon has a new printer program(PrintPro) that appears to be very good for cross comparison. It is in the software section of, at least my 9000II/9500II, drivers,software..section of printer.
4) just checking this...are all your drivers for printing software(Lr) and printer current?

Canon has gone through a new, installation and setup program according to Canon Support yesterday. It has a few hiccups and if you don't see acknowledgement at each step, it may not install properly. This happened to me last week on my 9500II problem.

Let me know if these help or not and I will suggest someother "try's".
Good luck!
Dan

Dan,
Thank you for your interest in helping me with this issue.
Your suggestion number 1 worked very well.
I reconfigured QImage, selected the correct Canon paper ICM profile, let QImage handle printing as opposed to the printer driver and voilá I got real blacks and grays.

I am a Canon fan (cameras, printers, ink and paper) but never the less it is amazing to me that Canon can not produce a simple printer driver that can print true blacks in a brand new generation printer!

Dan, once again thanks for helping.
Persio.

Great news Persio! I have never had a problem with my 2 Canon printers with blacks. A week ago it was the blues..it was the driver on my 9500II...the same old driver on my 9000II printed the blues correctly...Go figure?
Glad all is well..I am glad I could be of some help. Printer problems always frustrate me to no end!!!
Pleasant printing my friend and send some more of those georgeous Brazilian women up North!!!: At 68 they sure make my eyes young!!!D
