p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · when there is no sun - flash work

Hi everybody,

we always thought our images at portrait shootings are so much better, when there is sun. Makes the images pop more and you have more possibilities when trying to create something interesting.

When we had a nice wedding with a cute couple we could get a bit disappointed when the weather was not good. We felt our portrait session does not end up so good as it could with some nice evening sun.

We thought about what we could do with flash instead what is not like the traditional look. Here we took two girls into the woods and tried something without sun. It was evening and the sun was about to drop behind the clouds on the horizon. Only the first, third and last images have real sun, the rest is flash.

What do think about the approach and the results?

What do you do when there is no sun? Do you do something to create a bit more punch?

any ideas or C&C are welcome.

heiko

Hi Heiko,

Just great !!! Though number 7,9,10 & 12 I just dont see the color effect, flare ... But they are also great, very inspiring.

What u did in 4 works great to me.

4 & 8 my favourites.

When there is no sun I do the only thing that can be done, I go drinking Guinness !

1) Glanced over the set.

2) Contacted my therapist for a Skype session to sort through my response to 12.

3) Regrouped, came back and had a closer look…

Heiko, I liked the set overall very much and if I understand your post, I’m impressed with how effectively you were able to use flash to mimic the sun. I’ve never tried this the way you did and am intrigued.

No. 6 still reads as flash (but it’s still a very nice shot).

To my eye, the most convincing are 2, 7, 9, 12. Really nice job. Did you gel your flash or warm up the shots in post - or both?

Regards,

Chuck

Very cool shots. Very inspirational to see creative use of the flash in these situations.

Oh, and the girl in 12 will never drown

Hi Chuck,

did you show your therapist the image? What was his thoughts?

The flash is gelled warm and then edited to taste...

What are the odd composite reflections and rainbow flares?

So it is done on purpose? I can't keep up with these trends.

nothing like practice time ... to work on the craft and your tool-belt of skills we bring to a wedding.

Yes, on purpose, been doing that for 2 years or so. Some think it´s artificial crap. We like it. Can spice up an image from time to time.

9, 11, and 12 are pretty amazing. It's unbelievable to met that 9 and 12 aren't sunlight. Really well done.

There's something about #1 that is a little off-putting. I wasnt sure what it was at first, but, looking closer, I think its the double-exposed branches on the side of her face. It almost feels like a photoshop filter. Whereas #10 the effect looks natural because her face isnt obscured by it.
