One question: I know it's heavier, but outside of that, how noticeable is the difference between these lenses? I rented V2 for my Nov Africa trip, and am now so spoiled with the 500 f4, that I want it. But I cannot afford the new one. So - having used the new one, will I be disappointed in V1? (Again, outside of weight.)

Thanks Canon people!
Sharon

After using the 500V2 for over a year and handling a V1 again, the V1 felt like a TANK! IQ though, I can't complain with either. I find V2 works much better with V3 extenders, especially the 2xIII.

I can't give a first hand report but everything I've read on the subject seems to point to the benefits being better IS and better function with the new TCs. IQ with the bare lens and AF with the bare lens should be all but equal.

Thanks you guys. The version 2 will never be on my radar unless I win the lottery - and since I don't play, well.... I know that it will be heavier, but I made the mistake of thinking that I could hand hold that v2 while in Africa, and honestly I lost a lot of images to softness. So, I'd need to have good form and support with either lens, and I'd love to have this one for the next couple of years for wildlife and then perhaps pass it on. PLus, I've never gotten along all that well with extenders. Thanks again!

Have you looked at the pricing on Canonpricewatch.com? I bought my 500 F4ii through their web site and they are going for $8200 now.

Everyone has to make decisions on luxury items (for non pro users) like this. With higher resultion cameras coming out over the next couple of years and the possibility Canon might stop servicing ver 1 units over the next decade I think values (ver 2 premium) will remain constant.

The version I should serve you well. However, I don't feel the $3k difference in price is lotto dependent ... They are both lotto dependent . If you are looking for a version I try to find a like new copy that should be trouble free for years.

I had the 500 v1 and replaced it with the 600v2 for more reach with same weight.

In my view the only significant differences 500 v2 vs 500 v1 are:
v1 is cheaper than v2
v2 is lighter than v1
v2 works better with 1.4x viii [but this is small effect]

The iq is pretty much the same. See:
http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=117&Camera=453&Sample=0&FLI=0&API=0&LensComp=745&CameraComp=0&FLIComp=0&APIComp=0

My 600v2 is roughly the weight of 500v2 but longer and bigger. So obviously I was not much fussed by the weight of the 500v1.

If you are strong enough, there is no downside to 500v1. I typically handheld the 500v1 for brief periods (15m) and used my monopod after catching the first pictures. For example, monopod was not practical on the tundra buggy for polar bears, so I handheld for long periods, with good success.

I bought my 500/4L IS new in 2010. I see no need to update to the Mk II. It's possible that like Scott, I might go to the 600/4L IS II some day. I'd really be after the 800/5.6L IS reach, but the newer 600/4L IS II + 1.4x III is probably a good alternative, for more than one reason.

I agree with this, although I would note that proper technique means a lot. As Peter said in a recent thread,

Like Scott I also took the leap from 500 I to 600 II. The extra reach was the excuse I used to sell myself on the purchase (I'm a sucker for logic, so it worked, ) but the surprise for me was the better IS. I'm constantly finding myself shooting quickly because the wildlife here is not very acclimated to people. The IS improvement was a big deal for me (or maybe my technique just got better, or who knows what), but I get more keepers. But Image quality? I don't see any significant improvement with the bare lens.

Thanks for this - I borrowed an 800 from Canon to shoot cranes recently and I really am not wild about the f5.6 limitations. In good light and dead steady it was great. But for me, the lens was a lot to handle. I suppose if I owned it I could practice more and get better but again, this is out of my reach financially. Really, I think I should be putting all of this cash into home repairs, but ... this must be what a mid-life crisis looks like for a female photographer!

Thanks everyone for answering this. I'm sure it's been asked a lot, but I really am aware of the weight issue. Not wild about it, but I realized I don't have the strength/technique for using even V2 handheld, at least not for very long. I tend to get sloppy. So I need to use support regardless. Traveling with it will be more of a drag, to be sure.

And yes, Godfather - they are both lottery dependent! Good one!
