Just a thought issac, think the 1/250 is the difference in sharpness from the Siggy and Tammy, as the Siggy @ 600 is 1250 and the Tammy @ 600 is 1000

Hi All,

Can anyone comment on the auto-focus tracking performance of the Sigma 150-600mm lens? I have read multiple reviews and threads on the forum, but I haven't found much concrete information relative to this characteristic for the Sigma. I'm primarily interested in acquiring the Sigma to shoot motorsports.

Thanks in advanced for sharing the information.

Those look pretty good considering the conditions you have described. I bet those little guys in high winds are quite a bit bore difficult to track than an sports prototype coming towards you. Thanks for the info!

They are bordering on evil. Like little missiles. Plus I was at close range. I would think a larger object moving on a steady plane should be far easier.

I think you did an admirable job tracking those little martins. It's difficult enough tracking any small birds that fly so fast, add in the conditions you had, looks like the C siggy and your skills are up for the task at hand.

How successful were you with little rockets with your tammy ?

I call those swallows "flying torpedoes". It's a wonder that you are able to get them in focus.

Those appear over-sharpened to the point where they are accentuating the background noise.

Imagemaster......I may have oversharpened the sparrow but I didn't think I did that with the dove....I was using a rather high ISO though which may have looked like oversharpening

I think those pictures are amazing, Nice colors, perfect sharp and good contrast. I also like the DOF.
If they are taken handheld OS must be ok
Also think its partly because of Your 7Dmk2

I can see there has been done little PP so its depends on you, the lens, camera and object, Nice combination.
I've preordered the Sigma and have to wait 2 weeks more so I'll enjoy yours and others pictures and comments in the meantime

Great shots. Too bad the EXIF has been stripped from them.

Isaac, when posting from Flickr the exif data only shows up when u link to BBCode of the original uploaded size of the image. ie. i like posting @ 1200 x 800. so, i upload to Flickr @ that size. then i upload to FM. alternatively i also cut and paste the flickr exif data as text centered a few lines below the image code for those that don't have an exif viewer in stalled in their browzer.

since u use DPP like me, u can do a convert and save function which allows u to resize your image before saving in the Convert and Save daughter window just click on the resize radial box then enter the number u wish to resize to.

Isaac, those are some very nice pictures. I just might pull the trigger on the Sigma this week. Thanks for posting the pictures and sharing the information.

Question for Sigma C owners (Isaac, etc). On the 7D2 do you have access to all AF points at f/6.3 at 600mm? Have you tried a 1.4TC with the lens and if so, does the 7D2 allow centre point AF thinking it is only f/8 and not f/9 as it really would be?

These samples look great and I wouldn't mind trying the Sigma C.

I have not tried it with a 1.4 but would like to for sure. Need to figure out which one it would work with and I will buy it.

Anyone know if the Canon 1.4xiii works with it? Or do you need the kenko?

Thanks Isaac. I know Sigma makes their own 1.4TC. I would be most interested knowing how it works with the Canon 1.4TCIII as that is what I already have.

Sigma has stated that with their f/6.3 lenses, AF (with/without) teleconverters will work the same as with a Canon f/5.6 lens, and that should be with the Canon TC or the Sigma, though you'll likely want to grab the Sigma version for best AF performance.

Question Isaac, have you done any tweaking with the Dock to the lens, or are these images as you received the lens.

All hand held with the OS on. To me the key to getting good pics is very simple: Good light, close subjects and a steady hand. Then you just need to press the button. By the way I do extremely little processing. All done just in DPP3 (point whatever). No photoshop or anything else.

________

Either that Sigma C is truly a very good performing lens and for value too or your shooting technique is great. Or both.
Smaller birds don't stay put like many of the larger birds, or larger BIF. More power to you.

I just read the manual the lens came with. It mentions that it only works with the Sigma teleconverters. Think I will buy the 1.4 and see how it works with it.

Now I have another question. I shoot at f8 with this lens. So when I add the 1.4x do I now need to shoot at f11 to keep the same sharpness?

If you are used to shooting f/8 on the bare lens then yes you would probably need to shoot f/11 to see similar IQ. With my Canon primes I usually shoot wide open with the bare lens and 1.4TC and sometimes stop down with the 2.0TC. TCs will more often require stopping down to get the best out of the combo but it depends on the lens. Have you tried shooting much wide open at 600 f/6.3? Are you shooting f/8 for IQ or DOF? I find once I'm at 800mm or longer on 7D2 then I need to stop down just for DOF nevermind IQ considerations.
