p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Lenscore.org: Do their results make any sense?

I just found out about this website and was looking through their measurements. Seems like a really cool test protocol in theory, they claim to be using a 200MP large-format scanning back with an enlarger group to measure all kinds of different lenses. The website is extremely vague on details though and when looking through some of their results, there were a number that just don't pass the sniff test. For example:

  1. 85 1.8 is listed as having the best control of LOCA outside of the great white primes
  2. 100-400L MK I is listed as having both the worst distortion and worst LOCA of all Canon lenses test
  3. 400 F/4 DO MK I gets a 57% higher score for "Resolving Power" than the 400 5.6
  4. 400 5.6 is also reported as being softer than the 16-35 2.8 MKII
  5. 300 F/2.8 MKII is reported as the softest of all the great white primes (aside from the 400 DO)

Too many odd results to list them all. Does anyone know anything more about the group behind these measurements? It seems like there's either a serious flaw in their methodology or somebody's taken a baseball bat to a few of their lenses.

Keep in mind, they also only test one copy of each lens (for the most part) so sample variation could be an issue. Also, who knows what microlenses the sensor has. For example, in DXOmark the D800e and the D810 get different results on the same lenses because of their filtering arrays and such.

Who knows, but it seems very strange.
Any single number rating is damn close to worthless though.
There should not be optics between the lens and the sensor if that's what they do.

That would be nice, but unfortunately we seem to need all sorts of arrays and lenses to minimize cross-talk between pixels and get the right colours. But then again, guys using medium format digital backs encounter a lot of issues with their sensor's micro-lenses when they use tech cameras with lots of swing, and we still haven't gotten colours as accurate as film (on the pixel level) with our sensors. It's a 0 sum game, so it seems.
