p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Sir Rufe ... strikes a pose!

My "pet" Rufous again ... Taken last evening during a lull from chasing away interlopers!

Most energetic little guy , making 1000's of flights per day scaring off dozens of other hummingbirds and quite a few chickadee's... He has been tolerating my presence & clicking lately, so these shots are all handheld @ approx 5 feet (1.52 meters for those who are foot/inches intolerant)

Happy Sunday from "hummingbird hatchery" S. Vancouver Island.

Wow, those are really great. Used to have a Rufous at our old place. He would bomb any hummingbird that dared to use his personal feeder. He perched 10 feet up in the tree though, so I never could get shots like you have.

Love this set! The first is awesome . I get a couple of them in the winter during migration. It always amazes me how far they travel all the way to Louisiana. My last one headed back your way about 4 weeks ago.

When these guys turn in a certain direction, those feathers light up light a neon sign... Quite amazing

Spending literally hours watching these wee creatures (and I talk to them when they come close) and move very slowly with my lens... seems to be helping to instill confidence. Even at 400mm , one needs to get very close in to get the best detail and light of course... light , which can be scarce around here!

OMG Birdie ... I didn't realize they wintered in Louisiana ... I thought it was S Cal /Mexico and C America? The rufous species, as I guess you are aware is noted as the tiniest bird that migrates the farthest distance.
I find them a total marvel... The males begin heading South about mid June and the females and young a couple weeks later. Then its relax time again for the year round Anna's I think they grow weary of being pushed around by the little rufous gangsters! )
