Hi there,

For those of you who regularly rent or hire photo equipment in the UK, whether for testing, occasional use of a specialist lens or to minimise depreciation of a large collection of gear, what lens and bits of gear would you find yourself needing most? I'm guessing 100-400s and 5D3s are high on the list, but other views very welcome.

As a point of transparency, I'm working with the owners of http://www.youhirestuff.com to prioritise the best stock to acquire before a launch next month. Apologies if that's against a rule! Hopefully it's a legit question

Thanks,

Alex.

I don't hire photo equipment because we don't have that kind of service here and when I looked at Lensrentals/Borrowlens fees, they would simply be higher than my income from the assignment. Yes, something's seriously wrong here...

For me I'd be hiring a 1Dx and 400mm f2.8 L IS lens, becuase that's what Canon thought it would be best combo for a low earning freelance sports photographer. In the past, I'd be renting a 1DIV and 300mm f2.8 L IS, because it's the same thing from FOV point of view. But, luckily, I own this combo so I don't have to rent.

Thanks Milan. We're trying to get the pricing right to make the hire make sense financially even for those on lower fees. Input appreciated! It seems ultra long and ultra short lenses are in demand, not surprisingly.

Obviously the rental fee of superteles is a sticky subject. They are a high priced item and the repair bill is quite high if something goes wrong or they are dropped. However, paying fee of 300-400€ for a camera and a lens, when the pay is usually lower than 100 or even 50€ in some cases is not feasible... these are tough times.

It's certainly a tough balance to strike. Whilst jobs of 50 Euros might never cover the cost of super-tele hire, I think starting at 80GBP /day for a 400mm 2.8, for example, is a good middle ground.

If I were you, I would cover the main prosumer cameras -7D2 and 5D3, have a few 1Dxs and then the 24-70/2.8 II and 70-200 2.8 II. Toss in some 35, 50, and 85L lenses and I think you would probably cover the largest bell curve of work horse gear. Whether those are lenses people would rent, I have no idea. I just know that those are the lenses I most often see being used in the field of event and concert photography.

DSLR's are generally less rented by pros, since they already have a good camera and renting another wouldn't help much. But sometimes they might need a sports body like the 1Dx or D4s, or a high-megapixel camera like the D810 (not to mention medium format). Same goes for lenses like the 100-400 - it's cheap enough that people already have it, or decide to rent something better if it's a special occasion. Lenses like the 200-400 f4, 300mm f2.8, and 600mm f4 are more likely to be in demand.
