p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · A quick strike by a big owl using Canon 400 DO II + 1.4x III

I saw a Barred Owl with a captured crayfish last year, but this year I saw the sequence from start to finish. I was observing it perched above a shallow pond. Then, a lightening-like strike from above caught me (and something else) by surprise.

On the look out.

Spot something??

Gotcha!

A little showboating before leaving.

Awesome.

You should cross-post to N&W (as you already know).

Just add "EF400mm f/4 DO IS II USM +1.4x" to the Topic & you're golden.

Actually, I would have never noticed or even given it a second thought especially considering that these are great pictures taken with Canon equipment.

Hmmm . . . I don't know why . . . but I suddenly find myself starving for some Cajun Crawfish and Shrimp Etouffe!

Thank you. I took your advice.

These are great shots. Thanks for sharing. I really like that last shot. Never would have thought that owls eat crayfish.

Fantastic shots ! Congratz.

I'm curious about the DO II. Any comments in general on how you like the new 400 DO, and in particular how it works with the 1.4x and 2.0x ?

Thank you.

There are several threads on this Canon forum related to various 400 DO II owner experiences. To me it's excellent bare or with the 1.4x III extender. I've not used it extensively with the 2x because it greatly limits AF--both the speed and the limit to center point only. Also, I haven't used it with the 2x enough to comment on the amount (if any) of degradation to image quality.
