Ummm - you need to work on your PP.
It is painfully obvious - especially on the right - where you have darkened the background.
Nice tonality and midrange contrast in the jacket make the texture really pop.

lol - sorry if that came across harsh.
I suspect #1 is you are not working with a properly calibrated monitor - this is crucial to seeing shadow tonality. You can't properly edit if you can't distinguish tonal gradients.
I think the biggest "sin" was the brush used was relatively hard and it shows the edges.
If you use lightroom I would suggest both the brush correction tool with auto-mask in conjunction with the new radial filters. Man you can make the background go away with style and grace using those.
In Photoshop it boils down to learning to make selections - bring up the refine edges dialog to work on getting closer.

I agree.....this is excellent advice. I learned about monitor calibration in a very hard way and ended up with nearly a thousand pictures that were all processed incorrectly.

Calibration is too easy and not terribly expensive to do and it will help you avoid my kind of catastrophe.

The only other thing I might suggest would be this: free calibrators you might find on the internet.....no. They're free because essentially they don't work.

Thanks Jon, and Bryston. I do all PP on a laptop - it's interesting.
