p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Canon 600mm f4 mfa question ?

I'm going to mfa my Canon 7d mark ii with my Canon 600mm (also with the Canon 1.4 tc )What is the minimum distance to the focus target that i can get away with or what would everyone recommend for distance to get the best results?

Thanks Troy.

I'd almost never shoot anything at that distance because of issues with heat, water vapor, moisture etc. I would MFA at the distance I normally shoot at. You could also set of different MFA settings for different distances and then use them for different C1, C2 etc.

What is that from, the LensAlign or similar guide? Even though I have the long ruler kit, I find the shorter distances better.

The farthest I test a 500-600 is about 60 ft. Once the lens is dialed in there it's usually good everywhere. If not then I'd send it to Nikon.

Canon recommends 50 times the focal length (30m) and LensAlign recommends half of that (15m). If you add an Extender, you should use the 'extended' focal length in these equations; i.e. with a 1.4x Extender, it would be 44m (Canon) and 21m (LensAlign).

I test my 500/4L IS bare and with 1.4x and 2x Extenders with the LensAlign II target at a distance of about 12m, which is the most I can easily accomplish indoors. I do a few spot checks on more distant targets outdoors, and it's always been fine.

If you have a prefered or typical subject distance, then use that; otherwise, pick something convenient and later do a few spot-check tests at other distances.

With a 7DII all those figures x 1.6. For full frame then yes.

The crop factor is not related to the AF distance. It makes no sense.

No. Crop factor does not change focal length. It merely changes the apparent field of view because of the smaller sensor size. An Extender does change focal length.

I would also recommend the distance you normally shoot at . or both the recommended (30m or 15m) and the distance you normally shoot at . then keep a record of the scores and use the relevant one (keep the average as the default )

if your finding it hard to MA at longer distances then add in an extension tube . that will fool the camera into thinking your at much longer distances while keeping the target much closer to get a really good view of the differences each MA setting makes .

Just redid my 120-300 last week using a target about 5m away . with my 13mm tube added 5m becomes near infinity . the difference of the near and far MA's was only 2 points so I just set my default as the middle of those 2 scores

Good point. I generally call it what Canon calls it: AF Microadjustment (AFMA).

What about shooting with the 7d ii and 600mm v2? Do anyone know the best distance?

I'd go with Jim's first post above and then start enjoying.

Do it at the distance you will use it at most. Sure Canon recommends 50x focal length but that may be too far if you shoot closer subjects.

You cannot set a different MA for each custom mode.

I looked at some comparisons. Even though its the same length. I saw some major differences between both. I am looking to purchase both the 7D II and 600mm v2 together.

There are definitely lots of differences between v1 and v2 of the 600 f/4 IS (all in favour of the v2 of course except for price). However, AFMA distance should be the same whether you own either version. 7D2 and 600II is a deadly combo. You won't be disappointed if your okay handling a big mass/volume of lens. I would recommend at least a monopod as handholding is difficult at that pixel density and that focal length to create consistently sharp shots.

From monopod
