p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Looking for new laptop

My laptop died and I'm looking to replace it.
I want a SSD drive, probably 51GB.
16G Ram
Windows 7 or 8.1
I won't be doing much photo processing with it, mostly used for travel for down loading and saving photos.

Here's one from Amazon with description and a link to it.

Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks

Rod

you don't want to go that route that AMD processor setup is weak and slow. an intel i5 is minimum 2core and average 4 cores and it will make a difference.

Are you thinking of desktop CPUs? AFAIK only a few Intel mobile i series CPUs have four cores and they are all i7s with suffix Q in the nomenclature. Many mobile i7s are dual core and all i5s are also unless something has changed recently.

If you're not going to be doing much processing you don't need 16GB of RAM, Win 7 is old and Lenovo are not making them like they used to. This doesn't look like a particularly good deal to me, despite what the very small number of comments say.

I'd look for a machine that doesn't have a hard disk and runs Win 8.1 for which the upgrade path to Win 10 is very good. Win 8.1 is a lot better than Win 7 or 8 and Win 10 should be a further improvement.

Microsoft are releasing their Surface Pro 4 in the summer and there could be a difficult choice between it and the Surface Pro 3 depending on how they tweak that machine soon. These are great machines for travel because they're so light, and battery life in the 4 is said to be a big improvement over the 3. The SP 3 is on sale in places like Costco and Amazon for around the same price as the Lenovo so it's pretty much gone mainstream. It has a USB 3 port too so it's good for transferring files.

Don't need to worry about migration path to Windows 10. Microsoft just recent announced they will migrate every copy of Windows even those pirated ones to Windows 10 for free. I guess maybe making sure Windows still relevant is crucially important for Microsoft's future.

that is from windows 7 up. after working with 7 and 8.1 i'll say i find 8.1 considerably more streamlined to work with. working with the tech preview of 10 still a little rough.

I bought a Sager back in the summer of 2000. I first read about the brand in Laptop magazine. It was aggressively priced against the big name brands, and at the time, Laptop mag awarded one of their models a top pick. Although a tad heavy and not the most beautiful looking in the playground but it was spec'd the way I wanted and ran without a hitch.
